Suffolk County, in New York is looking to ban Body Piercings that they feel are “not safe”

The county Board of Health, which regulates tattoo and piercing parlors, has proposed banning body modifications. The move would outaw lip piercing, tongue-splitting, implanting, branding, permanent eye makeup and piercing of the mouth, tongue, septum and genitals.

Do you think local government has the right to regulate how you decide to decorate your body?

No. If we do them we are on a path down a dark road

    Neither local or otherwise.

This is a perfect example of where any form of gov. doesn’t have the right (or need) to step in here. If someone wants to express themselves by putting a metal rod through their face then let them do so.

This reminds me of a story posted on uneasy not too long ago where they wanted to ban wearing iPods at crosswalks in NYC because of the number of idiots that forget to look both ways.

I have two 12ga liprings, one of which used to be 10ga. Never had a single problem or infection or even pain. I mean i think the whole nanny state NY thing is retarded to begin with…but wtf? lip piercings? They’re some of the most benign of any, especially when done correctly.

The government shouldn’t ban piercings, but they should make it a law that the places/people providing piercing services should be licensed. Only places that use sterile instruments and take the proper precautions should be allowed to provide piercing services.

… which is exactly what the law currently is (at least in WA). In other words, there’s absolutely no justification for the proposed law. I’m also fairly confident that if it were to pass, it could make it all the way up to the Supreme Court, who would most likely rule it unconstitutional, based on a whole shit-ton of precedent.
