After playing with the private beta for a few weeks I’m excited to give the first screenshot tour of the anxiously awaited SlingPlayer client that is now available for download as a public beta (via
SlingMedia’s Website). As with all SlingMobile software once the software reaches GM, Sling will offer a free 30 day trial after which the software will cost $29.99.
To install the application you just sync the PRC onto your Treo, and run the installer. When the program first launches you are greeted with some quick tips on how to use the player. I can’t stress how important it is to read the directions. However if you choose not to read the directions follow this one tip – the spacebar toggles the 5way navigator on and off. The next step is to click into the preferences pane (lower right corner) and plug in your SlingBoxes FinderID which is a HUGE pain to type. Sling plans to offer an application that will copy & sync your FinderID when the player hits GM so one wouldn’t have to enter the ID manually.
Frame rates on the 700p average 15 frames per second at an average speed of 150k/s. After the jump is an example of playback on a 700p.
The client is officially supported only on the Treo 700p but it does work on Treo 680, but since the 680 is not a 3G device playback is painful. The quality is on par with the SlingPlayer for Windows Mobile, however unlike its WM counterpart, the PalmOS version can’t do full screen playback as of yet so you are stuck looking stupid (but very well styled) option bars.

Is this a hoax? There is no announcement of any public beta yet on ant Slingmedia site.
Is it just me, or does the Palm OS look about as advanced as Windows 3.1. It’s 2007, people! Update your operating system!
Looks like the 700p Slingbox client chops the top & bottom off like my 700wx did. The Slingbox client on my Motorola Q goes full screen at 30fps with average speed of 850kbps on Sprint EVDO (Slingbox upstream speed is 384kbps)
linked on engadget, btw. @dalton: I’m sure Im not the only one who prefers palm OS over the windows-based handheld os. It looks a bit dated, but its very functional without a bunch of crap to sift through.
@sky – I was just having a bit of fun. I used to use Palm OS (1999, I think), and I don’t mind it. I just thought it would be a bit higher res by now. It pretty much looks exactly the same.
I am looking at the iPhone…it may or may not have as much functionality as a Palm device, but it sure as heck looks pretty.
yeh, I am treo through and through but the cleanness of the iphone is tempting for sure.
