800Notes – Fight unwanted calls
Dan and I receive some interesting emails in the inbox. Today we received an interesting email today recommending check out 800notes.com. If you wander on over to the site you’ll find yourself staring at dozens of forum like messages reporting phone numbers and short descriptions. The reason for such a site? 800notes was created in order to fight back against unknown phone calls. The question to ask is, "is there a point?"
Got a call from an unrecognized number? Look it up to see who it is, what they want, and possibly how to stop the calls.
Got a fraud call? Report the number, warn others, and stop the crime from spreading.
Don’t know how to stop a telemarketer from calling you? Read what other people are suggesting.
The idea is simple. If you receive a call from an unknown number (missing caller id), irritated individuals can visit 800notes and enter the number in order to cross reference the database to find out who else received calls from the number. Since each number is associated with a short decriptions, you’ll find out if anyone else had to put up with being hung-up on or was forced to listen to someone breathing heavily on the other end
I inquire, shouting out to the readers, curious to know if anyone finds this type of service useful?

i don’t know if I find it useful but I get a call EVERYDAY from 336 231-6491 I pick up the phone, and say Hello… and they hang up, I call back and get a half assed recording saying the number is no longer in service and error code DW50 or something… very frustrating.. I may type it in here and see what shows up.
heh I started thinking about it, and this site would be great for messing with your friends.. go in and put their number in with like 10 entries with comments like.
“full male escort services telemarketer”
“supposed rainbow and unicorn delivery service”
then show them the web site and tell them to type in their phone number to see what shows up… that should be good for at least a couple chuckles.
Forget the phone calls… Im tired of getting mail everyday for things I have no interest in. Reduce my mortgage payments? I dont even have a house!!!! And don’t even get me started on the credit card offers…
I have used http://whocalled.us/ just to look up numbers as people call. Gives you an idea of who called, but if there is no caller ID name that I do not pick up.
Chadillac: Not much mentioned on this number: http://whocalled.us/lookup/3362316491
Interesting site. I looked up the number that has being calling me for months and found that it’s an American Cancer Society http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-678-846-0507. On the last page of the thread a telefundraiser from this organization is actually answering questions. Cool! Great way to receive feedback from people and for us a great way to know that we are heard.
Ed already referred to it, but WhoCalledUs has been around for a longer time, lists far more phone numbers and many more entries per number from people who received unwanted calls. (I have no affiliation with the site or its creator, other than being an often satisfied user.)
Save your time and skip 800notes, it’s just a poor attempt to duplicate something that already provides a better service for free.
I prefer Phone Spam Filter (http://www.phonespamfilter.com) – they offer a way to actually block callers.
Yeah, 800notes is good, as is phonespamfilter, but there’s another similar site that is also user-sumitted reverse phone directory, but it allows you to report on any phone number at all.
I found Yahoo’s phone number in there. A live person at Yahoo! That wouldn’t really get posted at 800notes since no one is ticked at Yahoo (except for their stock falling), but someone posted it at http://www.callwiki.com
Thx!
