The year 2000 (In 1950)

Posted in Geeky by Chad at 1:05 pm

A great find! Someone tracked down a full article from a 1950 “Popular Mechanics” magazine that was trying to predict 50 years into the future and give foresight as to what was around the corner of the future (dun dun dunnnnnn) with full page scans including pictures (illustrations) and packed full of wishful thinking!

Check out this gem:

“Because everything in her home is waterproof, the housewife of 2000 can do her daily cleaning with a hose”

The really cool and sometimes sad part is some of them have actually come true!

“Cancer is not yet cured in 2000. But physicians optimistically predict that the time is not far off when it will be cured.”

and last but not least… more wishful thinking and … well… just read it.

“If old Mrs. Underwood who lives around the corner from the Dobsons and who was born in 1920 insists on sleeping under an old-fashioned comforter instead of an aerogel blanket of glass puffed with air so that it is as light as a thistledown, she must expect people to talk about her “queerness.”

Who would have thought an old blanket was so faux pas!?

Classic!

  1. This is why we can’t predict /any/ in the future, except our inability to achieve something. It’s why I hate watching most futuristic movies and documentaries of “whats to come”.

I just don’t understand what some of the people were thinking…. plastic dinnerware that melts down the drain of the sink…. come on! Like first of all thats absolutely retarded to think we’ll just wash our plastic into the water supplies, and in order to fix that it would need to be water soluble …. last time I checked food(s) eaten off a plate usually contains hot water …. thus your plate is melting on your table or lap as soon as you get a nice goop of mashed potatoes.

    wishful thinking though!

Some of it is out there some of it is on track with today in many places. Other would have never come along because it is not cost effective .

So we already have pictures on home phones lol
But I guess shopping online is much funnier than with a phone and a screen. And easier.
Wonder what people predict for 2050…..
