Apple’s best Windows mockery advertisement yet – Vista vs. OS X
Anyone out there that has had ample time to familiarize themselves with Windows Vista will surely relate to this latest Apple advertisement. Personally, I think the extra layer of security is great… Only, there are scenarios when completely obtrusive overlays requesting permission are just downright stupid.

Ok, Apple really needs to get of this campaign
Bahaha!
Was this aired during the SB? I was surprised I didn’t see any Mac v. PC commercials during the big game.
Hell I use a PC and still find most of these ads funny.
That was the best ad yet, made me laugh.
Apple are screwing up. Everyone sympathises to PC because the Mac guy is such a fail.
it’s great but…the average joe won’t understand this at all.
vista is going to take at least 2-3 years before this joke even gets a laugh in a crowded room.
Absolutely brilliant. I’m also a PC user and I loved this. I also think you’re really selling the “average Joe” short, this isn’t too hard to understand, especially given that XP SP2 has had the “cancel or allow” warnings.
Apple still can’t ‘Think Different’ When will they realise that Windows is far more superior and have some real ads showing their features.
i love the illusion that OS X is a flawless OS without any issues or security holes.
Oh and my illustrator never crashes requiring me to delete my user pref, right? right…
HAHA I love these commercials, but they are kind of stupid too, because lets face it.. its a fantasy mac world.
“i love the illusion that OS X is a flawless OS without any issues or security holes.”
please link me to a security hole in OSX.
ehh.. this is funny, also true..
Oh man, the ads make me laugh.
@NEIL
you are wrong Neil, i am in a room with an average Jane, he is quite understand the ads. and laughed. You see, PC is explaining to the audience about the security system.
The best ads so far. I hope this is final, its getting me worried that people will suspect that the Mac is the bad guy.
“please link me to a security hole in OSX.”
I don’t have a link, but I can tell you there’s plenty of holes. OSX and BSD just don’t have the market penetration to make distributing exploits in the normal way effective. The only advantage to a hacker would be this false sense of security, because I’ve seen fad Mac users open goddamn anything.
@BRANDON
“please link me to a security hole in OSX.”
I can link you to 31: http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/
The month of apple bugs. :-)
And there are plenty more.
Yes, I know two or three of the bugs listed are from 3rd party apps but most of them are gaping security holes in OS X. Some of them are so incredibly insane that one starts to think if some of the OS X developers ever even heard of the most basic security measures in programming. Say as you will, you would not find bugs like °21 in a Microsoft OS.
I’m in no way advocating Windows here and I thought the above ad was quite funny, but only because currently there are almost no ITW-exploits for OS X doesn’t mean that it is secure … it really isn’t.
@Brandon,
I have to agree with Chris on this. OSX doesn’t have a big enough installed user base to make it worthwhile exploiting its flaws. Some people would like to think that OSX is perfect, there is no such thing as the “perfect” program. Never will be, ever.
What really funny about the commercials is that from the technical side the Mac vs. PC debate, I’ve seen OSX crash just as much or more than a lot of WinXXX machines. It DOES happen and when it does, it will bring pain down on your world.
@Paul: how is that an OS problem? I mean, you say yourself that you can delete your user pref. Well to delete a user pref, no reboot is required, therefore your OS remains intact.
illustrator crashes and hoses your user pref? that’s an application problem. call adobe…
@Matt and Chris
“I can’t substantiate these ridiculous pro-windows claims, but I’m sure they’re true.”
See how silly that sounds? Google should bill people for filling their cache with BS.
Look, OS X 10.4 is demonstrably more stable than any version of Windows up to Vista. We’ll see about Vista, as it’s still too early to tell. My bet is on OS X, but then I tend to bet on kernels with available source code, like OS X.
There are some good points coming from this line of commentary.
Mac users do act as if they are immune from everything which is not wise.
The PC suffers, in part, because there is a huge base and:
1. Hackers target the largest base
2. There are so many damned vendors selling HW & SW that it
is probable there will be incompatibilities and therefore problems.
I would assert here that if you use a standard mac with the ILife software and perhaps Microsoft Office 2004, photoshop CS and firefox, you are going to have a pretty solid machine if you don’t do anything out of the ordinary. In other words, you don’t hack the system but use it as a tool to do work.
The upshot here is I think Apple is absolutely bloodying it’s opponent in this “boxing match for market share”. Yes, from the silence we are hearing from the PC’ers which is a sign that cuts are being opened up and points are being scored.
The Mac started to slip, IMHO, because Management started asking computer weenies which platform to standardize on and the weenies fingered the platform that would guarantee the best job security. If we had all adopted macintosh, the IT departments of the fortune 1000 would have been half the size they are today!

Un-huh, definitely. Vista is almost as ‘more superior’ to OS X as your English is to anyone else’s.
Moreover, if I remember correctly, Microsoft’s adverts are generally composed of laptops surrounded by cartoon castles with meteors flying into them, no? Damn, those are some real ads – what great features. Pretty sneaky of those 114,000 viruses per year not being in that same meteor shape, isn’t it? Then Windows would be safe.
I agree with Myke. ALSO: Why isn’t this on the Get A Mac page yet?
I think Apple should put more emphasis on Mac than dissing PCs. They’ve done this in the beginning of the campaign but as they’ve progressed, “averages joes” i agree will just smile and continue watching CSI not even caring what a mac is. that’s just my opinion
My take is neither system is more superior; that is like comparing a motorcycle to an automobile. They both do well in different areas, when it comes to 2d illustration and music, I use my mac. But when I want to play a game, or create an amazing scene in 3D studio mac or autocad, I prefer my pc. The argument is all about bias, and that is stupid.. just admit that both systems are excelent at what they were designed to do; if windows were to become more like mac, then why would be need OSX? If OSX became more like windows why would be need microsoft? Hell why not implement all the features of linux and solaris too…
is’nt that part of the reason everyone loves os x, the fact that you have to type your password every five seconds to authorize. (i realize its not really every five seconds but i doubt vista is that obnoxious either). the commercial is still funny but this series really opens up apple to attacks on their own os, given it’s better than windows but it’s not perfect.
This is annoying they should stop taking digs at the PC it’s pathetic who would wanna buy things from a stuck up company that can’t rely on people choosing to use Macs over PCs so they have to realese this propaganda.
How can people still believe that myth of Macs not being a worthwhile target for security attacks? The Hacker who wrote the first virus for OS X would be famous overnight! And you believe noone has tried??
