How to get three months of free T-Mobile WiFi
How kind of T-Mobile to give away three free months of wifi for installing Vista - but with a little EASY hackery installing (or even buying) Vista is not a requirement.
Here’s the trick: It seems all T-Mobile is doing to verify you have bought Vista is checking your OS based on the user agent string your browser spits out, and that can EASILY be changed.
All you need to do to take advantage of the free T-Mobile Hotspot WiFi is:
- In FireFox (You should be running this by now!) download User Agent Switched
- Restart firefox and go to: Tools > User Agent Switcher > Options > Options…
- Click “User Agents” and then “Add”
- Fill out the window with following info:
Description: Internet Explorer 7 (Windows Vista)
User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)
App Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer
App Version: 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)
Platform: Win32 - Save it, go to Tools > User Agent Switcher > Then click the newly added one.
- Browse over to http://hotspot.t-mobile.com/vista/ and you should be redirected to a trial sign-up page.
Enjoy! [I must give credit where credit is due]

How are people getting around the ActiveX check that I am running into using FFx and the User Agent extension?

The User Agent Hack works to get you to the sign up page…but I don’t think we will be able to use it unless there is ALSO some way around T-Mobile’s ActiveX control.
Under the “Learn more about the promotion” link on the sign up page. Scroll down to question 13 under “Special Promotions.” It states that you have to install an ActiveX control which T-Mobile will use to “validate your ownership of the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system.”
Has anyone been able to get around it?

Isn’t that clever. I didn’t get any ActiveX check under FF/Mac.

Neither did I :) I signed up successfully, turned off the agent switcher and logged in normally.

heh, another t-mobile wireless service hack. first there was a way to get free web access on your phone (google it), now it’s free access for your computer… it’s almost as if they make their services easy to hack on purpose… i am a happy t-mobile customer, let’s put it that way. :)
