Free MPEG2 Encoder

This goes out to all our Windows readers (There have been many complaints we have been too Mac focused lately). The problem with MPEG-2 is that it is a licensed property of Dolby Systems. With all licensed technology royalties need to be paid, and if these royalties are not paid – your license will be revoked.
How about a reverse engineered free MPEG-2 encoder, that will let you author DVD ready files. This is a little geeky so I encourage you to “Read More”, but free is good right? Also of note for those who want to PLAYBACK MPEG-2 files VLC is the answer to your prayers.
Does any other UNEASYreader want to recommend free encoding codecs (such as LAME, and HC)?

ffmpeg is a pretty good encoder for just about every video and audio format out there. Its a command line app for unix but there are mac & windows builds out there. It is extremely robust.
