Sometime at CES LG will announce a hybrid “Blu-ray / HD-DVD” player. But who really cares? The cost of both devices is way too hight for the average consumer to care about, and the movie selection is paltry at best. To me this news falls in the same category that Ferrari announcing they are choosing a different leather in their cabin. Moving on!

Obligatory press release below:

LG Electronics (LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communications, announced that it will launch the world’s first dual-format high-definition disc player, capable of playing both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD content. The unit will be released in the United States in early 2007. Details will be provided at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held January 8-11 in Las Vegas.

LG expects this technological breakthrough to end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high-definition disc formats for both content producers and consumers.

I’ll be sure to grab some snaps of it when we are at CES.

if it costs $1999.99 the war will continue until a reasonable alternative is released. (1000ish)

  2. How can I get into CES? I will be in Las Vegas on those dates, but I have no way of “proving [my] affiliation with the consumer electronics industry”!

    Does being a blogger count?

Don’t worry – you don’t have to prove it – just SAY you are. I’ll there with bags under my eyes and an etched laptop!

I look foward to that device to clean up my cabinet a bit, hopefully it can accept firmware updates for both formats as well though. Id pay , as of now , 1500 for it.

I wont say the format war is over until it’s over. From seeing what happened with SACD and DVD-Audio, I’m a bit weary of what a hybrid player will do to both formats. Will it cause the stubborn Blu ray camp to finally see the light and for one format to win out over the other? or Will they both continue to be produced, eventually being pushed back to the far back corner of the electronics store (SACD) and only become used by audio/videophiles willing to put up with the high disc prices, high prices for decent players and all the company politics.

  6. Alex B says:

i know consumers will be happy to not have to choose which format… but what about production companies? i doubt that they like having to produce both blu-ray and hd-dvd disks, or even worse, having to choose one format causing them to only be available to half the market. this doesn’t even come close to ending the blu-ray/hd-dvd war, it is just a little extra convince for consumers.

  7. Mike D says:

the multi purpose disc is a better “solution” then the multi purpose player people have to commit to one tech or we’ll get nowhere either way though

  8. Is there no way to get into CES for free?! You have to pay 200 bucks!

I’d rather go to the Adult Entertainment Expo on the same day for only $60.00!
