Boost Your Car Remote Range! – video powered by Metacafe

The skill level on this is (thankfully) low. All you need is a little sand paper, a small scrap wire and a soldering iron. In the words of Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor: “More Power”

Great find, Dan. I’m going to try this… with my wifes keys :)

The guy’s voice is really annoying… sounds like a wannabe radio DJ from the 80’s.

looks like itll just kill the batteries even quicker lol

  3. Dan says:

I’d rather be able to open my car from a mile away :P

that is a pretty rad hack, think i’ll do this to my maxima’s remote.

The item he’s calling an antenna is clearly labelled “XTAL”. That’s the oscillator crystal for the transmitter. Soldering to its case has at least 2 hazards: excess heat from unskilled soldering will kill the crystal and wayward solder shorting out components.
If the remote does survive, the output of the new antenna is going to be raw signal without the encoding that locks the remote to your car. His demo is of an isolated car; what happens in a carpark?
Add to that the prospect of voiding your remote’s FCC compliance.

meh, just did it to my spare remote, no improvement. walked 30 feet and tried both, kept going and the both stopped about 35 feet, no difference in range for me.

    GM keyless entry remotes.
