Wii Media Center X – It was only a matter of time

It was only a matter of time before a Wii Media Center was bound to surface. What fun console could be more deserving than the Nintendo Wii? The developers over at Red Kawa recently released what is being dubbed as a multi-OS friendly streaming content media center for the Wii console. The release is considered to be an early alpha.

Wii Media Center X is a free multimedia server developed by Red Kawa. It allows you to stream certain types of pictures, music, videos and files from your computer (where the server running) to your Nintendo Wii. It runs on most major operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Note that only certain types of files are supported at this time. The limitation being that the Wii console is very much incapable of playing anything but video content with Flash roots. However, it is worth noting that Wii Media Center X is capable of streaming FLV video files, MP3’s, and pictures.

Keep your eye on this project as development continues. Take a peek at the Red Kawa forums for a little more help getting the Wii Media Center X up and running. I’m going to sit back and watch as progress continues…

Red Kawa also offers a PS3 Media Center X for interested parties.

Effing sweet! If they crack MP4 support, then there’s no need for me to buy an iTV.
