Good point Stan, I didn't take into consideration the fact that the Wii comes with one set. Does anyone else think that these remotes should have shipped as rechargeables?

Derek, your math is off slightly. The Wii console comes with a wiimote and a nunchuck, so if you want 4 total players, you need to purchase 3 extra sets at $60 (3 x Nunchuk) + $120 (3 x Wiimote) = $180. (The ability to store Miis in the remote's memory suggests that Nintendo is hoping people will bring their remote over to a friend's house for team play. Wishful thinking on Nintendo's part, I suspect.)

I haven't seen anything too compelling on the Wii yet for 4 players. Two, definitely, but not 4. Maybe when Super Smash Bros comes out...

Nintendo must be making a considerable amount of profit off of controllers. Wii console = $250. Four Wiimotes plus Nunchucks = $80 (4 x Nunchucks) + $160 (4 x Wiimotes) = $230. Not to mention you'll need the other classic controllers for some of the older games.
