Is Life in Prison Excessive for Smoking Pot?
Puzzle for the Governor: Is Life in Prison Excessive for Smoking Pot? From 10 years probation to testing positive for marijuana translating into a life sentence. Is the legal system being a little too excessive with its enforcement?
The Drug War Chronicle reports that pressure is building for Texas Gov. Rick Perry to commute the sentence of Tyrone Brown, who was sentenced to life in prison for smoking pot. In 1990, when he was 17, Brown took part in a $2 robbery in which the victim was not physically injured, a crime for which he received 10 years of probation. A few weeks later, he tested positive for marijuana, and the judge not only revoked his probation but inexplicably resentenced him to a life term.
Reminds me of something a friend mentioned about California concerning the “medical uses” of the substance. Anyone living comfortably without fear of being pestered by the ergh local enforcement. Ouch, I think my ankle is acting up again, it might be time to research alternative methods of alleviating the pain.

That judge is a jackass.
Although California and a couple other states do have legal medical marijuana, it is still illegal in Federal law, which “trumps” state law. Of course, that only means you can be charged for it by the federal government and they would have to really want you in jail.
Not only that, but there are actually about seven people that are still on a, now closed, federal medicinal marijuana program.
Oh, and kids, remember this, smoking pot doesn’t make you cool. It makes everyone else look cool, instead.
That article is disturbing. The same judge was different for some rich white “John Alexander Wood, who received a 10-year suspended sentence for killing a prostitute. When Wood repeatedly tested positive for cocaine, Dean did not send him to jail, let alone give him a life sentence. Instead he arranged things so Wood didn’t have to take drug tests anymore. ”
I also think its weird that a governor has the power of judge and jury. In this case I think someone needs to overturn the verdict, but should it really get to the governor? I dont even know if governors need any formal training in law. Apparently it didn’t help the judge though.
Good for him, finally someone stands up to those stupid pot heads.
Its illegal , and not in just the harmless way of ripping off money, its a drug, something to fight over, to kill over to control and abuse people with.
He proved he cant blend into society and therefore should be removed from it.
They gave him a chance of probation, which is easy, all it means is dont fuck up for 10 years.
Narc! Stop raining on our party. Go to your Nixon rally, narc!
I dont smoke weed, I just like saying that. And yes, I think life is excessive for any non-murder crime.
This makes me want to move to a different state, I’m ashamed of Texas now.
annon, I hope you are joking. The only reason why marijuana may have any perceived “drug-like” qualities is because it is made illegal, not the other way around. You don’t see people going around killing for cigarettes or beer.
The same judge also only gave a rich cracked up white guy 10 years for killing a hooker. Which do you feel needs to be removed from society? The poor black guy?
Annon, no offense, and none should be taken. Uneducated people, like you, are the reasons why Bush is still our idiotic president. If you think smoking pot is so wrong that pot heads should be put in jail for life, I suggest you do some research and compare the effects of alcohol and effects of weed before you open your mouth again. Just because the majority agrees on something doesn’t always mean it’s the right.
Whats your point syt? When did I say that all pot smokers deserve life? I said he does because he proved that hes just going to screw up for his whole life and he has nothing of value to society, and I said nothing about drinking being good or bad.
And Dogcow, the only reason pot has drug like qualities is because of THC you moron, not because its on the restricted list. The only thing that does is hype it up, and don’t forget the only reason firing a gun in city limits is illegal is cus its loud and not because it can harm people. lol. Its the state of mind that has people addicted to it both physically and mentally, its a chemical addiction, and people need their fix because they think it makes them happy.
Smoking pot makes it seam that being bored and doing nothing is a perfectly fine way to live, instead of going out and learning something, or contributing to the world
Is it just me or am I talking to a brainless rock?
poor thing…
@syl
Yes, yes you are talking to a brainless rock. He is part of what is called the Ignorant Masses. I hate how people always hype up weed as something terrible, and yet the effects of alcohol and cigarrettes not only are worse for the individual, but kill more people yearly than weed. They really have no idea what they are talking about
Again I REPEAT where do I say smoking and drinking are good for you?
The subject of the article is on an INDIVIDUAL, and my first post was about the individual and how he proves that he just cant keep his act together.
Anyways, who’s stupider, the rock or the person talking to it?
Oh and the effects of weed have more impact on the brain compared to the effects of drinking on the body, if you smoked up as much as you drank you would be in far worse shape. And that brings me to a point that when you SMOKE UP, your still SMOKING, who cares if you grew it in your house and didnt you insecticides on the “crop” its still smoke in your lungs, in house fires its the smoke that kills people not the flames.
“Its illegal , and not in just the harmless way of ripping off money, its a drug, something to fight over, to kill over to control and abuse people with.”
All the things you affiliate with drug use is only caused because it is made illegal. You saw the same thing happen with alcohol in the 1920s. Maybe I’m a moron, but I think history is useful.
annon, You dont seem to have any knowledge on people who smoke. I would like to inform you, there are many people who smoke and contribute to society. Our president, for example. There are many of these type of “moderate” smokers. There are also many people who drink alcohol moderately.
Anything in excess is bad for you. Chemicals are released into your brain all the time. I am bad for society because I enjoy running and do it in my spare time. Its an adrenaline rush. I cant live without it. By your logic, it should be illegal because instead of running, where I’m inhaling all the smoke from cars and hurting myself (not to mention my knees and muscles), I should instead do something productive.
weed is a healing plant not a drug open your mind grab the stick out your ass and toke on some grass
If it states in the article anywhere that someone was sentenced to life in prison for smoking marijuana, then we really should start out fresh with an article that doesn’t bend the truth IN THE HEADLINE. It was not for “smoking pot”. It was for “breaking probation”. You can smoke your brains out and do not get paranoid. You are not going to jail. If you go to jail, and if you break probation, and if you live in a rather more lawless district in the inner city where tolerance has yielded a few dead cops, then you should meet one of our most honorable public servants, a judge. It is not for you and me to debate this. How dare you question someone with a million-dollar education. You never looked up his judicial performance record, and that is published. I will not stand for coddling criminals. This judge probably got tired of ppl getting away with murder. Stop thanking ppl who rob you and appreciate being able to demonstrate good conduct.
