Coin metal is worth more than the face value
Those pennies and nickels you have rolling around the floor of your car, stuffed between the couch cushions, and collection atop the washing machine as you find them during laundry are no worth their weight. The US Mint is now imposing a penalty on anyone who melts down the coin metal for other uses.
Given rising metal prices, the pennies and nickels in your pocket are worth more melted down than their face value — and that has the government worried. U.S. Mint officials said Wednesday they were putting into place rules prohibiting the melting down of 1-cent and 5-cent coins, with a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for people convicted of violating the rule.
I know we’ve covered this topic before, but discovering that there is now a five year penalty on top of fines up to $10,000 is crazy. All of you out there melting down their pennies to make nice BB’s be warned, Uncle Sam does not like you melting down coins.
Be like me, use the coins to make those wobbly desks or chairs even. Jam a few under the table or chair legs and you’re set. Guaranteed.

1st thing i thought when i read the title was sweet lets melt stuff down.. then i saw the 2nd part haha damnn
i wonder at what temp they melt at,,
Copper 1981 F.
Nickel 2647 F.
Damn thats HOT!!
Enjoy!
Don’t forget pennies are made of Zinc, melting point 785F.
technically if the government would allow people to melt them down they would become more rare and the abundance of new metal would make prices on the market drop… thus making the penny worth more than the metal…. what a vicious circle!
A fine and possible prison time for melting down coins that YOU own? Pure scare tactic bullshit if I may say so. Or are we just holding the coins for them? WTF
If I bust my ass to earn money, how can they tell me what I can and cannot physically do with it? For risk of the same fine/prison time, I would rather shove a roll of nickels up several politicians asses. Sideways.
Don’t forget, you can use a stack of pennies in the door jam to keep your friend from getting to class on time.
We did it to one kid last semester so bad that he had to jump out the window to go to class!
Also, nickels aren’t made of nickel, otherwise they would be magnetic.
You know, you can “always” put your pennies under the trains, like I used to when I was young. That way they aren’t coins anymore.
Of course, putting coins on train tracks is illegal too, but I don’t think it’s a $10,00 fine. :D
Oh, and you have to be able to actually find a working train.
Well Im in Canada, so I can get rolls for American Pennies and nickels cheap because theres tons of American change up here, I can melt American money here and not be subject to your laws because it isn’t illegal up here so no extradition could take place
