How strange to see a story such as this after hearing a Verizon commercial about hearing a song on the radio and having the ability to download the track directly to your mobile handset. A young woman was sentenced for striking a cyclist while downloading ringtones to her mobile handset.

The 25-year-old former Champaign resident, a University of Illinois mechanical engineering graduate working for Caterpillar in Peoria, died on Sept. 8 from head injuries he received Sept. 2 when Stark hit him with her car because she was downloading ring tones to her cell phone instead of paying attention to driving.

It was only a matter of time before a cellphone related accident involving active ringtone downloading while driving surface. Will such a scenario prompt increasing laws forbidding the use of mobile phone while driving? Or, will a larger push be made for voice activated commands? “Download xxx ringtone by xxx artist”. I think cellphone will soon be emblazoned with warnings stating that dangerousness of downloading and driving. “Friends don’t let friends download and drive.”

I could see the necessity of talking and driving in some situations, but downloading ringtones? I can’t think of any situation in which that is so urgent that it couldn’t be done after you reach your destination…

I think she got off WAY too easy.

How many people need to die before people learn that they need to put the fucking phone down when they’re driving?

I don’t think its that big of a deal.

It’s actually sorta funny if you think about it.

  4. Roy says:

I’m with Adam. Talking on the phone while driving is at sometimes necessary, but getting the latest ringtone is a stretch.

in the UK it has been illegal for well over a year to use a handset whilst driving. You are allowed to talk using a hands-free kit but anything involved looking at the screen and holding the phone is forbidden. Many people still do it though…and I wouldn’t say it was strictly enforced.

its sad though that the stupid one was the one who lived and the smart one was the one who died.. thats the problem with our society! The smart people are dieing and the dumb people are living!

  7. Hitsuji says:

Laws in Ireland already forbid such use of a mobile phone. A mobile phone can only be used while driving if you are using a hands free kit.

  8. Jerry says:

I was behind some dumb girl last nite, I-75 left lane, dark, raining, she’s going 52mph and swerving left-right.

Then when she held up her cell phone to see it better, it was just confirmed…

    ‘MACKMACK’- you’re an asshole.
