Flip4Mac debuts Drive-in DVD ripping

Flip4Mac debuted its latest piece of software for OS X users which was created to ease the process backing-up DVDs to your hardrive for later viewing. The software, known as Drive-in, will create full disk images which retain the original DVD functionality for playback via Apple’s DVD player or Front Row.

Using Drive-in you can create an image of a DVD disc on your laptop or home entertainment system. The image preserves the quality, navigation and special features of the original DVD and can be played using Apple’s DVD Player or Front Row. Drive-in preserves the DVD’s original content protection. Drive-in allows you to play your images on any computer that you own but does not allow you to share your images with others.

Download a copy of the beta today and start backing-up your movie collection to a central media center or network storage device. Personally, I prefer good ‘ol Handbrake which seems to offer a little more flexibility as far as compressing content down for portable media player playback.

So, does this remove CSS or not? If it does, their statement about “preserving the content protection” IMO is wrong and the legality of their software could be questioned. I don’t mind it though :)

CSS IS retained. Their process is called Imaging, not ripping. It’s the preferred method for me to create a library of my DVD’s….no long waits for compressing and wondering what video quality I’ve sacrificed in the process. In a couple minutes, an entire DVD is imaged with artwork.
