That means that approximately one student in a standard grade-school class will end up under the supervision of a correctional institute.
A record 7 million people — or one in every 32 American adults — were behind bars, on probation or on parole by the end of last year, according to the Justice Department. Of those, 2.2 million were in prison or jail, an increase of 2.7 percent over the previous year, according to a report released Wednesday.
Did these statistics surprise anyone? One out of 32 Americans sounds incredibly surprising in my eyes.
Well, you can blame privatization for that. Our prisons are in the hands of businessmen whose profits are directly proportional to the number of prisoners.
If you want to do something about it, write to your congressperson and demand that all prisons be returned to the state (either confiscated or bought back, whatever).
thats funny, I thought there was 300 million in the US, not 224 Million?
at 7 million that would put it at 1 in 43 people in the US behind bars, probation or on parole.
I think they are refering to Americans not criminal aliens. It’s my guess that the 300million number includes criminal aliens.
it doesn’t really surprise me at all. The reason it might seem odd is that statistic groups that 1 with the other 31 .. its not as if the 1’s are hanging out with the 31’s all the time most of the 1’s hang out together.. in the dark
Not really. Im that 1 out of 4 comments that is on probation. Not something that im proud of but go’s to show you that you could be working with a few of them now.
