Is MySpace just broken?
This post was published 3 years 3 months 13 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.Could NewCorp’s acquisition of MySpace been a horrible mistake? It is becoming more aware to its users everyday that the poor ‘ol site is simply folding under its active subscriber base.
We get tons of email about how users are just simply frustrated with the ‘Can’t Add Friends’, ‘Messages/Inbox Down’, ‘Can’t View Friends’, or the ever so fun ‘Home Page Down’ error messages?
Just look at the problems.
My question is how much longer will users tolerate these errors, problems and other snafu’s? Have you already moved on? Do you think MySpace is hurting the internet, or opening a new level of communication between people?
heh… ironically I just got this while trying to log in
“Login is temporarily disabled while we fix some database problems. We’ll be back shortly. 11/30/2006″
This just goes to show and I can’t stress it enough….. scalability is key!
Basically they used a Coldfusion structure, which … I’m not saying is bad, but I haven’t seen many Coldfusion based apps that make me go “oohhhhh” … but I haven’t worked with many either, which makes me semi biased … spent a lot of VC… and built a shitty service at just the right time (time has more to do with it than anything) now they are sitting back collecting until their Fad (and yes, it is a fad) fades out.
In the mean time, bad programming, scalability, and database design seems to keep the community on the verge of collapse…. believe it or not and I know this from a little knowledge… facebook pushes out weekly updates on the same day EVERY week…. how many times have you gone to facebook and been like “damn, looks like its not working” …. thats because they used GOOD design, scalability, and data structures…. hats off to facebook, and a swift kick in the ass for mySpace
sorry for the length of this… its just something that bothers me and I kinda went overboard
Love;
Chad
Excuse me?
It’s one of the top used websites in the world. I’d imagine they’re allowed a couple of problems. Or is it because they’re not Web 2.0, they can’t survive?
It hurts the web… what it is for?… crappy designs, impossible navigation, embed copyrighted audio and video with no apparent reason?… if that’s why they exist, then yes, they should die…
Our nations youth haven’t seen the sun in months because of the myspace beast.
Well written Dan.
As an avid myspacer of 2-3 years, it’s officially hit rock-bottom.
Facebook is the way to go.
I am only on MySpace because I was begged to join. I am still an avid LiveJournal user. I logon when I have a new message, or to delete all the bogus friend requests. Anything more and it makes my eyes bleed.
@Don
being the top used something does not make you the best, it makes you the most popular…. user has a long list of members because they have a long list of users period, no one joins myspace because of its reliability or its ground breaking features…. people join myspace because everyone is already on it, and its been that way ever since the first rolls of the snow ball effect.
sometimes the best isnt always the most popular, and most times the most popular isnt the best… nuff said ;)
sorry my typing sucks lately… my fingers havent been properly translating my thoughts into words :(
heh a classic case of this would be Britney Spears vs. Christina Agulara (sp?) in a singing competition (sorry I brought it to this level, Im not a fan of either, promise) … Brit blew up being the most popular, but was far less of a singer than Christina.
alright now that I feel like a total schmuck for using that example, I am done ;)
Just stop using that and start using something new…
Like http://www.orkut.com
It’s from Google :p
Doesn’t everyone love Google?
(lol @ chad and the example above… you could have used better singers or even some decent bands xD)
I can’t add friends. Havn’t been able to for 3 months. + My player’s counter isn’t working. Not the think you want venues to see when they visit your site “Plays Today: 0″ myspace.com/sosuaverecords
I’ve emailed help quite a few times, about to just shut it down and open a new one.
Whenever I try to log in to myspace, it says “Runtime Error”. It’s been like this for a long time! Before this happened, myspace wouldn’t let me put a song on my page…
One of the major problems with Myspace that has been present for a number of months is the “browse” feature.
As an extremely popular community the ability to search for local users has to be a top requirement for a lot of users.
The ability to browse users a certain distance from a specified postcode doesn’t work on Myspace at all. There is no other option either to find local users such as in a specified town.
There is no excuse for this especially as I have correctly implemented it on a “emo” community site I am working on at the moment.
