Walmart has dipped their toes into the downloadable movie water with an exclusive “Superman Returns” DVD bundle containing a video download option with purchase of the physical DVD.

When you purchase a physical Superman Returns disc from Walmart, it will include a coupon that will allow for video downloads. The additional costs for these privileges are $1.97 for portable devices, $2.97 for PCs/laptops, and $3.97 for both portable players and PC/laptops. Now word yet on Mac support, even on the portable option.

You can bet I am getting my hands on a Walmart DVD, and trying this service out.

  1. Why would you be excited about this. Walmart is essentially making you pay for your own content three times to get it in the formats that you want. You’d rather spend three hours downloading a film, then just pop that DVD into your laptop? Considering that the service isn’t even compatible with iPods I think that this is completely weaksauce. It would be one thing if you could just buy the download, but to only be able to buy the downloads if you buy the DVD is just plan stupid.

Guys, we can work the system. Think about it, you have a physical copy and a digital copy, these two things can’t stay attached in the real world.
    DVD cost alone: $14
DVD cost with optional coupon: $14
Price for movie alone on itunes: $12
Price for movie as extra from Walmart DVD:$3-4
So… Buy a DVD at walmart, and resell the coupon code on ebay for $6-7 and net yourself a DVD for approx $7.

    Everybody’s happy.
