Big day for consumers rights

On November 22nd the Library of Congress yesterday approved six exemptions to US copyright. The first, is that cellphones can be unlocked, with no reprocussions. The second most important to gamers is that, for archival purposes, copy protection on software no longer being sold or supported by its copyright holder can be cracked.

It is still illegal to distribute the old games even if it is for free, and hardly ever do “adbadonware” cases go to court..

Additionally the Library of congress has green lighted the rights of educators to make compilations of DVD scenes, and the rights of blind people to use third-party software in order to read copy-protected electronic books.

I think these are excellent steps forward, to a more consumer friendly technological world. All new rules take effect on Monday and last for three years.
