The folks over at TiVo seem to be lost in the soup. They escaped bankruptcy with a software distribution deal with Comcast – which was a a huge boost to the publics perception of Tivo. Then using that high, they release a extremely expensive and much maligned HD Tivo, $800 for a PVR – I don’t think so!

It seems that TiVo will do anything to capture your money. They released a $50 premium Glo remote, which I guess is to simply add to their bottom line. To pad the bottom line even more TiVo suddenly raised their monthly rates to $19.95 for a one year contract.

Have they simply lost their mind?

This is especially disconcerting since every software update slows your TiVO down more and more. Mine simply crawls… along now when I try to do anything with it.

I personally don’t use a PVR. However, I’ve been watching this TiVo business unfold over the past 60 days and it looks like they’ve made some bad moves over there

A.) The cablecard issues with some cable companies resulting in a slow adoption ot TiVo HDs
B.) Not to mention the 800 dollar premium price tag for a player that only does a few hours of HD video recording forcing the user to hack the tivo and upgrade the hard disk drive to a 500Gb (another added cost)
C.)The price per month just went up to 20 bucks a month!

    what are they thinking?

We have a Replay, which we bought YEARS ago for a few hundred bucks. It has a “skip” button that lets you instantly hop 30 seconds ahead, very handy, which is what sold us on it over Tivo.

They may have changed the deal on newer models (ours only holds 40 hours of programs), but the service is FREE. And, you know, we are quite happy keeping our “standby” television to 40 hours, it has been what–six years?–since I’ve seen a commercial.

I’d bet you could get an old Replay for a song, screw Tivo.

Whoops, forgot to add the most obvious thing:

If you want something new and current, wait for the new Apple thing, bound to blow Tivo (and Replay) out of the water.

  5. Cynic821 says:

I followed the TIVO lawsuit thing against comcast, and it was BS, Tivo shouldnt have won that. TIVO is garbage in my opinion and comcast should just buy them and shut them down, the Comcast DVR is a thousand times better in my opinion.
