Travel is a requirement for my job, and with all my travel I am fairly familiar with the US airline system. With all this travel I noticed one critical flaw in the security at airports – the ‘E-Ticket’. I previously hesitated to raise such an issue online, limiting myself to alert all the airlines I have flown, but now the security flaw is in the wild.

Now a website was created specifically to generate a fake Northwest Airlines boarding pass, that will almost guarantee you get past security. The linked website, however, carefully shows how to prevent this gross security problem from becoming something that could harm people.

  • Give TSA employees scanners/computers, so that they can verify the validity of the boarding passes when you reach the security checkpoint. This is currently only done at the gate.
  • Do NOT allow people to print out boarding passes online. They’re far too easy to spoof.
  • Stop assumming that just because you know who someone is, you know if they’re a terrorist or not. Most of the 9/11 hijackers were not on the no-fly list, and none of the recent London liquid bomb-plot guys were on the no-fly list.

I found the information on the site FAR more useful than the generator itself.
Its an intersting idea. I don’t think I’d use it, due to 9/11 crackdowns and the risk of getting caught. But I can see how it could have its uses.

So my ex-boss is on the no-fly list… (Bob Johnson, ex-Bengals player too)
