My new favorite OS X utility – which helps keeps my lap nice and cool – smcFanControl was recently updated to include a handy temperature monitoring feature. For those that are unsure about what smcFanControl can do for you, grab a copy for yourself. The small utility allows users to control the fan speed (RPM) of their Apple hardware. I’ve tested this successfuly without issues on a few different hardware configurations and highly recommend this utility to anyone complaining of hot hardware.

As a employee at an Apple Service Provider, let me be the first to say ‘This app is so dangerous’. So many people are going to kill their processors, logic boards and or fan controls simply because they don’t know what they are doing.

Use at your own risk and if your machine dies, dont let the tech know you were using this- tampering with firmware or hardware controls can be seen as grounds to void your warranty. Be wary.
