The last time we posted about the Flying Toasters the site basically melted. But we are back for more punishment.

Mark Rickert over the last month has helped us compose, in my opinion, the best MacOS screensaver ever coded. It is completely written in Quartz composer so it is naturally Universal.

But the fresh code is not the only new feature. The revamped screen saver not only features the classic toasters we have come to love, but it also features “Proto Toasters.” Never heard of them? They are actually the programmers ORIGINAL concept of those popular winged appliances, and was only released as a limited special edition.

We have setup a special melt proof site dedicated to our obsession to all things toaster, and invite you to it download either the MacOSX full featured version or the more limited Windows XP version.

Also the screen saver is released under the Creative Commons license, but if you make modifications we also request that you submit it back to us at tips@uneasysilence.com, so we can update the master build.

So, what’s holding you back? Download the Screen Saver now

Geekness from the past! Hurry up uploading the windows file! ;)

  2. Mark says:

    AAHH!!!!

Nice packaging… much nicer than my original DMG (I’m not a designer… never will be).

  3. Dan says:

The windows file is up! Just reload the page :)

  4. Nicky says:

No classic toasters for us windows users?why only modern???

  5. Dan says:

We didn’t have a coder to do the classic toasters

  6. ClaMs says:

Haha what fun! Turn lum to 2, and max the number of toasters and slices, and enjoy. This is great!

  7. klown says:

    Where is classic in OSX?

  8. chris says:

sad about not have classic for windows. but thanks its cool

  9. DAn says:

Does not work on Windows Dual Monitor setups.

  10. Vic says:

Classic are much cooler… but were are them on OSX?

  11. matt says:

I guess there’s a minimum hardware requirement as well. It doesn’t work on my G4 Cube which is stuck with an ATI Rage 128 Pro.

  12. Bob says:

    Windows version

Not a very good clone… why don’t you go load up the ‘real’ one and watch it for awhile and see how the toasters interact with eachother

  13. matt says:

Great screen saver – but no multi-monitor support?

  14. Jon says:

    Dan=coolio thanks a lot.. it is amazing on 10.4 (not 10.3.9 :( )

  15. Dan says:

I’m seeing noticable banding when I turn on Rotate background on my iMac 24″.

I second the note on a lack of interaction between the toasters.

Finally, the toast could use a little work. There was much more texture to the bread in the Classic saver.

Still I think it’s great and can’t wait to see what else you’re going to do.

    P.S. Bring back Mowing Man!!

  16. Dylan says:

I love it. Though, the windows version is serisouly limited. I think Dan and Derek are trying to send us a message folks.

    (Macs are better)

  17. Dan says:

    Bingo :P

  18. Venture37 says:

Nice one dude, it’s great to see the old toasters back in action! :)

  19. Jason Bryant says:

    Where’s the music?? :)

  20. Steve says:

Very nice. But I can’t figure out how to get the classic toast. Bring back Daredevil Dan and Bad Dog. I’ve still got AfterDark installed on a Mac LCII — I’ll try to send some resources to you guys.

  21. M.E.H. says:

Cool, but doesn’t appear to be optimized for higher resolutions. No matter how slow I set the speeds, the toast and toasters fly across my 2560×1600 in quick blurry split-second bursts much too fast to appreciate. Cool though. I second the request for mowing man.

  22. M.E.H. says:

Gah, I had the speeds the backwards. Apparently greater values are slower. Some UI!

  23. Guill3m says:

    I love this screen saver….

  24. joi says:

i miss the sound and didnt the toasters elude? I cant remember clearly but i think so. but nice try anyway.

  25. Onie says:

    The PC link isn’t working.
    403 Forbidden error.

  26. Dan says:

Please try the PC download link again

  27. PVL says:

    What? No dual monitor support?

  28. RU says:

    No toast on Win XP?

Used to be able to decide how ‘done’ you wanted your toast?

    And toasters performed evasive manouvers.

(Also saw one where the Flying Toasters had somehow been brought into teh ‘Aquarium’ – fish swimming around together with the occasional toast, and toasters)

  29. Uli Kusterer says:

Hi, cool little revival! Happy to hear my Talking Moose revival isn’t alone anymore.

However, I would love if you improved the flight patterns a bit. The old toasters all flew in essentially the same direction, but faster ones would “pull out of the lane” and run past slower ones.

Also, the toast roastiness used to be configurable.

Reminds me of other nice savers, both After Dark (Boris, and the one with the spiders) and UnderWare (bouncing Bill and the cop and thief stealing hard disk icons).

  30. Larry says:

Would love to have the screensaver actually span both screen under OS X, instead of simply being mirrored (or is this possible). If not span, how about running two instances with different flightpaths? I just don’t care for it being mirrored :)

  31. Injecter says:

    So where is teh classic?

  32. woodenduck says:

When is there going to be a full windows version

  33. Michael says:

Thank you very much for creating this screensaver! I remember this screensaver when I was in elementary school. They had After Dark on the old Macintosh Classics and Color Classics. There was a lot of fun screensavers on After Dark; fishes, mad dog, light, lazer. The one that always was a favorite. I would always change the screensaver to flying toasters. I’ve tried looking for this but I was almost impossible to find being that I’m a PC user in my mature years. 18 years later it’s still a favorite of mine. Thanks very very much!

  34. Matt says:

So… I understand you all making one for Mac but then you go and make a ‘doze version and leave out *nix? What gives? Granted Xorg doesn’t like extra screensavers but that’s just not cool man. I want mah flyin’ toasters.

  35. erlene says:

Installed on my mac book pro, but can’t seem to find classic, only modern. Halp!

  36. Marshal says:

Same issue. Ive read the readme and I cant figure how to put it on classic? What are we missing?

  37. When you open up the options window, you have to scroll down to find the classic/retro mode. You can also disable the splash screen there.

  38. Kelly says:

um it takes me to a toaster note pad page how do i download?
