Get out of your Sprint contract penalty free

Not that I have anything to say about Sprint concerning service, current Sprint users who have been looking for a loophole to get out of contracts sans penalty now have their answer. Sprint upped the text messaging fee for subscribers meaning that current customers now have the option to cancel their contract without incurring the usual early termination fee.

Sprint is hiking its text message fee to $.15, which means that you can get out of your contract.

And it’s all thanks to the fine print in this service agreement! Sprint states they can raise your rates at any time. But it also says if they raise rates you can cancel your contract without a penalty.

If you use Sprint’s service or make payments on or after the effective date of change, you have accepted the changes. If Sprint changes a material term of the agreement and that change has a material adverse effect on you, you can terminate the agreement without a fee by calling 1-888-567-5528 within 30 days after the change goes into effect.

I love little loopholes like this that exist to benefit customers. I highly doubt that alternative carriers like ahem T-Mobile or Cingular would be as kind to customers if their monthly plans took a hike upward.

it’s actually a quite common practice… if they want to leave the option to up the prices at any time, they need to allow you to say ‘thanks but no thanks’… as far as I remember, I’ve seen that in all contracts

Yeah, I think it is quite common too. I had a chance to get out of my ATT plan a while back because of a similar loophole. However, from what I have been reading this is not going as smoothly as you would think:

Actually, this only applies if the text messaging rate hike affects you. It did not affect me and they wouldn’t let me out. However, they added unlimited text messaging for free to my account.
