Control your Macbook (Pro) sleep patterns
We all know that MacBook (Pro) owners can continue running their machines with the lid closed – as long as an external display and keyboard / mouse is connected to the computer. Pity for those that own neither and wish to run certain applications, like iTunes, with the top lid closed.
Fortunately, Apple notebook owners can enjoy the same closed-lid functionality thanks to a freeware utility known as InsomniaX.
It always has been a missing feature: disabling the sleep mode on a Apple Laptop. Who does not want to use it as a big juke-box or go warwalking. The best looking server ever, especially at about one inch height. This small utility is what you will want, this small utility acts as a wrapper to the Insomnia kernel extension.
Essentially, any Apple notebook owners can enjoy knowing that despite the fact that the lid is closed, the computer will continue running. Just keep tabs on the amount of time that the machine is closed in order to prevent damage to your LCD.

Hmmm… considering that these laptops get way too hot… having it working with the lid closed may damage your screen in no time…
Also… looks like it won’t work with the MB and MBP with the newest Apple Tiger update lol… Making the title of the thread useless :D
I’m sure the dev will have an update soon enough. I neglecting to scan through all the comments to find out that 10.4.8 does indeed break InsomniaX (for the time being).
My 12″ Rev A PowerBook has always been able to work with the screen closed. It’s only iBooks that can’t do it. Some people claim there’s a heat problem witht he lid closed, but since most heat is dissipated through the radiator/fan system, I’m not sure what the risk is.
As a general rule, don’t use your portable as a rendering farm, or other kind of long-term number-cruncher.
I’ve been looking for this for years.
Thanks you.
It is true that the 10.4.8 update broke Insomnia and me and fellow developers are looking for a fix but so far have come up empty handed.
