It was going to be a nice day out when my family and I set out to watch the first race of Aero GP which was to be held here in Malta. Sadly just after the first lap two planes touched slightly which brought about the crash of both planes into the sea. I was able to witness one of the pilots eject his single seater aircraft with a parachute. Unfortunately the second pilot didn’t manage to get out of the plane. As efficient as the rescue was, the pilot could not be saved and was soon fished out death.

The photo shows one of the planes involved in the crash. I took it just seconds before the tragic crash. View more photos on my Flickr.

It has just been revealed on local media that the pilot was Swedish aerobatics champion Gabor Varga. He can be found mentioned in the Guinness book of records for performing the greatest number of aerobatic loops in an hour – 256. It is very sad that such an interesting sporting event ended up in such a tragedy.

Update: I have just found out that the attached photo shows both planes which were involved in the crash. Gabor Varga was flying the plane located at the bottom, while the other plane belonged to Irishman Eddie Goggins, who escaped uninjured.
