Shut down Windows with a simple text message

Categorize this under “let’s pick on the network admins by shutting off systems via SMS on our lunch break” category:

Basically you setup a rule in outlook to look for say a keyword in the subject line of an email. Then you select run application as the action for when that keyword is found. Then all you have to do is write a simple dos batch file and use the shutdown command with the -f parameter to ensure the shutdown is not aborted by any running applicatios. After that the rest is simple you simply send a sms text message from your cell phone or other source to your email address. You must have autmotic send and recieve turnned on for this to work.

Feel free to grab the necessary file from Tim Matheson’s personal page in order to shut down Windows remotely via SMS. Do note that your computer must have a constant connection to the net. This isn’t some magic cellphone to computer trick for unplugged computers.

    Although I have heard of some particular Dell machines that would freak out and freeze up if a cell phone recieved a sms message within a close proximity to the tower (like inches)

    Pretty funny though
