Scientist calls dolphins dimwits
Try to ignore the fact that the article uses the word “dimwit”. Moving forward, I found the following claims by a one Paul Manger of Johannesburg’s University challenging to swallow. From what I’ve learned previously, dolphins are one of the smartest water mammals to date. Heck, even the military exploited dolphins at various times throughout history.
“The real flaw in this logic is that it suggests all brains are built the same … When you look at the structure of the dolphin brain you see it is not built for complex information processing,” he told Reuters in an interview.
A neuroethologist who looks at brain evolution, Manger’s views are sure to cause a stir among a public which has long associated dolphins with intelligence, emotion and other humanlike qualities.
I’d like to see this doctor swim around and identify mines underwater. Where does everyone else stand on the topic?

dogs can identify drugs…
…does that make them smarter than chimps?
it kinda makes sense, dolphins seem way to happy to be intelligent..
I mean most other creatures that show intelligence also have emotions that a clear and visual in most cases… dolphins for the most part seem pretty uppity… even in captivity … kinda like 6 year olds on a sugar high, always jumping and making that weird dolphin sound..
not to boot, they approach random vessels in the water regularly… I can’t think of to many smart creatures that endanger their lives in order to play with stuff…
chad, maybe that shows just how smart they are… :D if they can be happy, even in captivity, what are we doing wrong?
Everyone knows they’re the second most intelligent species on the planet. The first are the mice.
Dolphins, like dogs, are particularly social and good at interacting with humans. That does not necessarily make them highly intelligent.
What is intelligence?
