This falls under the little annoyances department. I got a lot of guff for complaining about the space the “Spotlight” icon took in the MacOS menu bar, I can only imagine how much I would get for this tip. You know how Windows XP places the name for the person currently logged on to the system at the top of the Start menu? Is there really a need for that? Yes and No, there is a method to their madness. If you run a multiple user machine, these names are helpful, but if you don’t you don’t run a multi user machine you don’t really need to have your name at the top of the Start menu now don’t ya? Here is a easyish way to remove it using the Group Policy console (the Microsoft Management Console snap-in used to edit Group Policy objects).

Alternatively, you could download the Microsoft Powertoys TweakUI utility. One of the many options is to remove the name from the Start Menu.

You always have to out do me! I’ll remember that :P (j/k)

This only works for xp pro, media centre and server editions of windows. Basically any edition except from xp home. This is because xp home doesn’t have a group policy console because Microsoft didn’t think that home users would need that kind of control over their PC.

I’m pretty sure that the TweakUI utility works on XP Home. Unless my memory is sleeping again.

TweakUI works, but gpedit.msc doesn’t work in xp home

    I don’t have that….but I don’t really care anyway.
