nintendo wii gaming console

I never understood why gaming console manufacturers would require their customers to pay an additional fee in order to compete against one another online. It never made sense. From a money hungry corporate world, sure… But from a gamers just want to enjoy games point of view, I could never connect the dots.

Q: You’re not pursuing a subscription model?

A: We view online gaming as essentially an enhanced way to enjoy the gaming experience and drive more sales of hardware and software.

Q: How do you extend your online strategy to Wii?

A: It’s the same premise. We will offer online-enabled games that the consumers will not have to pay a subscription fee for. They’ll be able to enjoy that right out of the box. The Wii console is going to be Wi-Fi enabled, so essentially, you’ll be able to plug it in and go. It won’t have hidden fees or costs.

Finally, Nintendo is going to set the standard for online full console gaming. At first, I was somewhat surprised when I found myself getting my ass kicked in Metroid Prime: Hunter (DS Lite) over the – Nintendo gaming network – within minutes of starting the game for the first time [for free!]. I will never be able to forgive the Microsoft’s or the Sony’s for forcing gamers to pay for networked gaming.

I thought Sony’s online service was free. You only needed to buy an online adapter if you dont have the slim ps2 which is already got one inside.

Am I forgetfull or has Sony Never charged anyone for online service. Only MIcrosoft has.

  3. Derek says:

I was under the impression that for certain games, Playstation users were required to have some sort of subscription in place in order to play collectively with other users.

On the PS2, it’s up to each individual developer. You can play Socom and Madden for free (among other games), but Final Fantasy XI will cost you a monthly fee of $13.

Also, when you leave it up to the developer, each game will require a different username/password and you won’t be able to keep track of your friends online. With something like Xbox Live, you have the same username and friends list no matter what. I can boot up my console, see what games my friends are playing, and join them. You can’t do that without a unified, central system. And those cost money. I’m more than willing to pay $50/year for Xbox Live.

Well, the NDS online service is rather stupid, you have to use Friend Codes which aren’t really the best thing ever.

PS2 Online is free except Final Fantasy XI and Phantasy Star Online.

PS3 Online will have a united service like Xbox Live, but again, for free.It will have all the Features Xbox Live has,but for free.Of course there probably will be some stuff which will charge Microtransactions. But basic stuff like sending messages, recieveing messages, playing Games online (except MMORPG) and such stuff is all Free.

So if any console at all,PS3 will set the Standart, because it already has the Titles which will have online play.Resistance fall of men will have 32 Players online play.
For the Gamecube, there was exactly one Online Game if I remember right, maybe two or three. So don’t really expect that the Wii will have loads of Games with Online Feature.

The PS3 will also have a web browser inbuild and Linux on it.And it has a simple 3,5 Inch Sata hard drive which you can plug in.And as the PS3 has a media player inbuild, that thing will become the Electronic Media Center in the living room.

If you got more questions keep em coming.

But if it works the same way, Pheen, I’ll take free. This is good news since I have been waiting for this system to hit shelves.

I dunno if I like this.. don’t bash, hear me out. As everyone said sony gaming is free for the most part, excluding (only one as far as I know) final fantasy XI. But think about the way xbox live is set up and then thing about how fragmented sony games are? I like the way Xbox live is especially with 360, with the ability to see what games friends are playing see all the games they have played see their scores and stats. It makes it easier to compete and collaborate. I am hoping that the Wii will have something like that.

  8. Dean says:

Well Mike, you have to consider that when the first Games for PS2 were Online, not even a official Adapter was out for it.I remember it because i was thinking about buying one (so ya know,THPS3 was the first ps2 online game).

I can’t think of the Wii having such thing as usernames, but rather such things as Friend Codes like on the NDS.

Also you have to be a bit gentle on the PS2 as it was way ahead of his time. And many Companys did not want to have to build in so much special stuff just so they could go Online.EA didn’t make their Games online for Xbox for quite a while, because M$ wanted it their way and their way only.Than the first games came out and it was messed up as it was like a failed experiment trying to combine XBL and EA’s online service. And what now,EA actually is (from what I know) the only Company that has their own XBox Live servers and manages them themself. All other Companys use the XBL servers from M$.

Also you can pretty much expect that the PS3 will have a direct XBL clone, part by part. There are already Rumours (or confirmed,I’m not sure) about the PS3 having Entitlements,a Archievement Points clone. Also people will have their one gaming handle over each Game and im pretty sure you will also be able to see what the others are playing.

I don’t have much hope in Wii’s online functionality, some games are nearly impossible to Play online because even offlime timing is everything.I somehow imagine that the 3D motion sensoring data will be easily multiplied compared to simple data coming from a Controller.

Also,Nintendo don’t have much experience in the Online Market except for the few NDS games that had Online Mode. And the Friend Codes thing isn’t really ideal if you ask me.But im pretty sure the Wii will have exactly that again.

  9. Mike says:

that sucks :-( looks like the wii will be a glorified emulator for me then. I refuse to buy the ps3 just because of all the things they have claimed as being new and innovative that they directly stole from other players. I hope the ps3 flops I’m tired of sony thinking they can push through formats that aren’t as compatible or competitive as others. See: blu-ray, umd, memory stick, beta max, atrac3. I will still be buying the Wii even if the online play isn’t up to par but I will feel as though there is a part of me missing. *sniff sniff*

  10. Dean says:

Exactly what did Sony steal ? The controller was out already once in 99 and the Sidewinder from Microsoft is also similar. They didn’t copy the Wii.

And blue-ray will not fail because most Movie Companys support the format, also the PS3 will easily sell 5 million units in 6-12 Months. That means Sony will have 6 million Blue-Ray players out there,HD-DVD won’t even have a million players sold, pretty sure of that.

Of course Sony stole some shit like the Playstation button on the new PS3 controller, but who really cares if they copy it really well ? Just means that you as customer don’t have to worry that your missing something on the Console.
