[...] these bizarre-looking creatures can detect a snack and gulp it down all under a quarter of a second.
“Most predators take times ranging from minutes to seconds to handle their prey, said Ken Catania of Vanderbilt University. “The only things I’ve found that come even close are some species of fish.
The secret to the mole’s impressive foraging ability is the 22 appendages that ring its nose. Nearly blind, the animal uses this sensitive, star-shaped flesh to feel around in its dark, underground environment.
Having never heard about the strange mole pictured above, I was surprised to hear the habit range of the creature spans from Canada down to Georgia. Has anyone else heard or seen of such a creature? I knew moles were ugly to begin with, but this one redefines ugliness.
Looks like something from Predator.
I actually don’t think its ugly, but is rather nice material for a Sci-Fi show.
I found out about these things when I was pretty young. I was living in Hawaii at the time, so there weren’t any around and I’ve still never actually seen one in real life.
I saw this on the discovery channel once… they are made for crawling in the dark and use their feelers for finding their way and determining if something is edible.
this probably won’t go over well, and will make me look like a red neck….. but I grew up on a family throughbred horse farm, and we used to kill them all the time because they will dig holes in the horse fields and if a horse hits one while playing/running in the fields it could snap its ankle and thus render it in deep trouble.
They are by far one of the ugliest creatures I have ever seen…. almost one of the most annoying, and damn hard to catch/kill.
sorry if that offends or upsets anyone ;)
Not at all “redneck”. Moles can wreak havoc on well manicured lawns. I’ve seen a number of contraptions resembling upside down bear traps used to catch these little buggers.
Chad – My wife’s family has TN Walking Horses so I know the $$$ of horses… Not at all redneck, just maintenance…
No, your not a redneck… you would have ended the story with, “We then bar-b-que them up and…” you get the picture… well anyway I agree it was just maintenace like the way I used tend my father’s dirt farm.
