The big business of unblocking MySpace

Newly passed US legislation proposes that all “chat rooms” and “social networking sites” should be blocked and rendered inaccessible to minors in all public places, including schools and libraries. This leave kids scrambling to get on to the wickedly popular MySpace website, and to get their IM fix.

As more schools and offices are blocking IM services and MySpace, proxy servers such as “Box of Prox” are springing up like wildfire. System administrators and content filterers are not able to keep up the rapid pace that these proxy servers are being created.

What do you use to bypass filters established by your network provider?

well usually I either use a boot disk for linux… but that doesn’t always work….. otherwise I have firefox around somewhere with tor on it…… but I guess if they didn’t block teachers….. the good ole “I forgot my password could I please use your account” usually works with me…….

Tor works for me. I haven’t met a filter that I can’t bypass with it.

Tor for the win, but sometimes it runs painfully slow.. Of course you could use a tool like the IP Sniffer application we discovered to reset some Admin passwords..

I have a similar problem at school. Not that they block a whole bunch of sites (the most annoying are free hosts like geocities and alike for alleged pr0n). What I do is use SSH over https’ port (443) to access home and then have a potentially unlimited access (either using tunnels of a SOCK proxy). Squid doesn’t let you run encrypted traffic on port 80 or 8080, but there’s nothing it can do against it over port 443 as it is supposed to be encrypted!
