FON – Largest free wifi network in the world?

I hate paying for wifi access like anyone else in high traffic, congested environments. Wifi access should be free! The only time a casual internet uses should have to whip out their wallet is for additional security measures (VPN & encryption) – check out HotSpotVPN.
FON is the largest WiFi community in the world, open to anyone who wishes to unite and connect to the Internet for free from any corner of the world without cables. It all started as a simple idea: enjoy WiFi technology everywhere across a WiFi infrastructure built by same members of the FON Community. Joining us is just as easy. All you need is to register for free, have broadband connection and to download our software onto your router. This converts your router into a FON Social Router. If you do not have a router that is compatible with FON’s software, you can purchase one of our subsidized FON Social Routers at our online store.
The moment I discovered FON, the temptation to share a connection far outweighed the skepticism that my personal network would be flooded with freeloaders. Fortunately, the area in which I live is nearly free of any wifi-enabled devices aside from the ones carried in my bag. Who doesn’t like a little sharing from time-to-time? FON also offers a great deal on a subsidized wifi router (Linksys WRT54GL/GS/G) for $5!
Sharing a connection via the FON social wifi network may be worth considering if you live in a technology deprived neighborhood.
Yeah know them for a while,im thinking about signing up there, just to get a 5$ router, flash it so it has no costum Fon stuff on it and Voila, saved a load of money.
FON has turned out to be a big disappointment. Consider yourself lucky if the router works. Forget about free access using FON or making money (if you are a Bill per their definition)
I’m interested, is it possible to re-flash these Linksys routers to a generic firmware? DG did you give it a try?
You can not re-flash it! FON router could be a big pain for $50 savings.
I recommend buying a working WiFI router from retail channels near you.
