YouTube surpasses MySpace in raw traffic

Dan and I won’t comment on our feelings concerning the use of Alexa for gauging traffic so let’s just sit back and enjoy the newfound news concerning overall traffic for these internet beasts. YouTube recently surpasses the traffic figures of the MySpace cash cow.

YouTube has established itself at the top of the league of the new generation of community websites by becoming even more popular than MySpace, according to research.

The video sharing site has taken a 3.9% share of global internet visits a day compared with 3.35% for MySpace, according to internet analysis company Alexa.

So let’s all be honest, who here visits YouTube more often than one of the sites which would fall under the category of “social network”? In essence, YouTube in itself is a social network of sorts is it not? Users upload videos, comment, interact, add favorites… It’s a whole network full of video sharing fans. Someone commented a few days back that Emo kids around the world would die in one fell swoop if MySpace continued to loose its appeal. I wasn’t a believer. Those Emo kids are uploading videos to YouTube.

  1. Yeah, I often spend at least part of my lunch breaks trolling YouTube for funny and interesting videos. And I work for Fox (as we’ve previously established). Then again, I hate MySpace and I don’t participate in any of the “social networking” aspects of YouTube. I just want to watch videos that make everyone else in the office wonder what the hell is so funny.
