Have an older USB 2.0 laptop missing a gigabit port? This Gigabit USB 2.0 Network Adapter from Belkin plugs straight into your USB 2.0 port (even on a Mac!) for increased transfer speed.
The device boasts the standard networking speeds of “up to 1000Mbps,” but as usual the actual transfer rate varies. However, I will sing the praises of anyone who can figure out HOW the Belkin USB device actually transfers data at a rate faster than USB 2.0 bus can handle. Hmmmmmm
its simple really, the data is being transfered at the speed of light. Because secertly, all USB 2.0 ports can handle data at the speed of light, USB 1.1 could only handle the speed of sound. Belkin is just the first company to figure it out
Firewire 800 goes at warp 2 (which is 8 times the speed of light http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_drive#Warp_velocities), but since none of the warp factors are offically known for sure, no one uses Firewire.
So is a dial up connection the speed of smell?

it actually uses _3 _usb2 ports, 480×3 = 1440MBPS …so thats FASTER THAN GIGABIT

Roy ~ the speed of smell depends on many different factors, such as the concentration of the smell, the concentration of the surrounding smell(s) and the sensitivity of the nose(s) picking up the smell, so it is not very easy to base anything on the speed of smell.
however, on the slowness scale, dial up is down there, just a smidg faster then certain smells, and a smidg slower the others.
dial up is the acceleration of gravity on earth, 9.8m/s^2, however, unlike gravity, as time moves foward, the speed doesnt increase, it just stays the same, at 9.8m/s
for a little refference info, the speed of light (c) = 3×10^8 m/s

Guys, you’re missing the point. It’s based on the speed of your ships transporter and the Klingon transfer rates that day. See, now it makes sense…. lol
Because, in my world USB2 runs about 1/5th as fast as a 100ATA drive [or 100 Ethernet] on a good day, transferring large files and things that really count. 480 sounds good, but it’s only a dream. At least Firewire is “in the ballpark” of the numbers they boast since they are a peer technology and can pull in the 400s if things are perfect.
However, converting even the fastest USB2 port into a Gigabit portal that transfers roughly 50 times as fast, would not only break the laws of science and physics, it would change the world. I hope Belkin has a handle on this technology, those on the Lake will be seeking them out soon…
I’m interested that you say ‘even on a mac’. The Belkin website makes no mention of Mac drivers, are you sure it will run on a mac? There are very few NIC devices of any description that have mac drivers, so say you want 2 nic interfaces on a mac what’s you choice?
