Green summer lawns and no sounds of mowing

Could you imagine the day green grass covered every lawn, including your own, without the single drone of a gas mower ripping through the air… ever? A time when little kids would no longer be pushed outside to trim the sidewalk or weed whack around the trees? That time may come thanks to the diligent work put in by Horticulturists and their green grass that never grows [meaning no lawn mowing].

For anyone tethered to a lawnmower, the Holy Grail of horticultural accomplishment would be grass that never grows but is always green.

Now, that vision of suburban blissand moreseems plausible as scientists have mapped a critical hormone signaling pathway that regulates the stature of plants. In addition to lawns that rarely require mowing, the finding could also enable the development of sturdier, more fruitful crop plants such as rice, wheat, soybeans, and corn.

Kids of the future will have it so easy! No more grass to cut on the weekends before heading out to play?! You have to admit, the idea of green grass that never grows sounds amazing.

I have a reel mower. Sure I have to sharpen/polish the blade a couple times a year, but there’s no noise, no nasty gas and oil, weighs less, takes up less room in my shed and it sure costs less.

I’ve been replacing my grass with trees, flower and bushes. The grass is becoming an intiting network of paths. I have been surprised at how easy and reletively inexpensive the process has been. I don’t use any herbicide or fertilizers. No poison, no thanks.

I don’t spend as much time pulling weeds as as I do mowing the same amount of area. A weed can be pulled while walking by, the mower is a bit more involved.

Once the plants are mature they won’t require watering. I’ll have shade, interesting things to look at and fun paths for the kids to run around. Seems a lot better than a weed-infested lawn.
