Newshutch – AJAX RSS reader loaded with eye candy

We can never have enough choices when it comes to web based news readers. With so many different options at our disposal, everything begins to blur and mesh together without users taking the time to notice the subtle or not so subtle differences. For the longest time, my web based RSS needs were handled by FeedLounge. Although FeedLounge offered the convenience and aesthetical beauty comparable to that found in a desktop reader, the subscription cost and slow refresh cycles began to tarnish the appearance and functionality if the service.

One of the greatest assets was the fact that the reader made great use of AJAX. Content was displayed live before readers eyes without the need for browser refreshes. Fresh items were continuously pushed to the front of the reader without the need for user inputs. The downside of the service, slow refresh rates of unread items (hours on end) and the subscription cost.

For those in search of an alternative AJAXified news reader, I recommend a little time behind the login screen over at Newshutch. Although a thorough review can be found over on PStam.com, I should briefly mention how amazingly snappy this reader is in comparison to Feedlounge or any other web based reader. Fresh content is presented in a simple two column format with sources and unread item counts on the left, and fresh news being displayed on the right. The entire service is free.

Only time and an increased user base will tell if the snappiness of Newshutch will continue. I’ve imported all my feeds into Newshutch for any feed reading I may do other than on my own machine. For desktop reading might I recommend NewsFire (OSX)?

Well, its good. But as for speed? I think it got hit by everyone in the world after a few people blogged it. So now its sloooowww. But damn sexy!

Am I the only one that uses Gregarius ( http://gregarius.net/ ). It’s web-based, but you run it on your own server. So you can customize it all you want.

  3. When I was playing with it yesterday before I blogged about it .. it was damn speedy.

I haven’t tried NewsFire in a while. At the moment I really like the opensource Vienna. I’ve been running the current trunk from subversion for about a month now and it works great! It has some missing features, but hey! this is not only work in progress, but if you’re not happy you can fix it yourself ;D

    Try bloglines.com

Ah it definitely looks like the announcements spreading around the net are definitely stressing the servers on Newshutch. Not surprising. A great test to see how the service will be able to handle the long term traffic.

xSmurf. Definitely try out NewsFire, there are a few new features in the beta build that was recenlty (as in a few days) released.
