Apple kills $899 iMac after one week!
I’m crossing my fingers hoping that the deal was temporarily suspended for a good reason. Maybe updates are around the corner? Maybe some sort of back to school deal is looming overhead? Regardless, why did Apple kill the $899 iMac after one week?
Apple today quietly pulled its newly introduced $899 iMac from its online education store. The entry-level configuration released last week for the education market that features scaled-down specifications when compared to Apple’s two retail configurations is no longer available to individuals, though institutions can still purchase the systems.
I knew the deal was too good to be true. The iMac machines are solid computers and I’m some what surprised that Apple pulled the option for consumer desktop purchasers. What a great machine to enter the Apple computing experience with.
Did any readers have the opportunity to place an order for the special edu-priced iMac?

I believe they quietly introduced the EduMac for a reason: it was meant for schools/universities and teachers only. Instead, it got quite a bit of publicity and the public suddenly said “hey, me too!” to the reduced price machine. Schools need a low-price Mac option that they can buy in volume. With the discontinuation of the eMac, Apple had to do something to win the contracts. So, instead of making a completely new educational Mac, they made a stripped down iMac. Notice that they really didn’t -kill- the EduMac, they just realligned the purchasing availablity to its intended audience.
Plus, the downgrades to the EduMac actually made me want to purchase the regular iMac for my classroom.
This is un-related, but i find it funny that all the new movies that are coming out use Macs now ;) For example, The Devil Wears Prada and Accepted both use ‘em.
