Essential Linux convert software list
The recent hohum of the interent is that prominent tech world individuals are making the switch from *gasp* OSX to Linux. That’s right. No switching of Windows to OSX going on here.
If you’re in the same situation converting your workflow from OSX to Linux, you might want to check out the following comprehensive list of sofware for the OSX to Linux conversion.
Having browsed through the list, I was almost motivated enough to load Ubuntu via Parallels to kick the Linux gears around. Any potential Linux users closer to making the switch after viewing the list?

can a person using parallels run OSX Linux and XP at the same time? or have a 3 camp boot camp?
Yes, It is VERY easying usinf Parallels.
Just create another virtual machine. As for bootcamp it is slightly more difficult: http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/Triple_Boot_via_BootCamp
Or if you just want to try it out, use Ubuntu Live. I’ve installed Ubuntu on my old PBG3 and it works fine. Slow, but fine. Check out the other flavors of Ubuntu, particularly xubuntu if you have an old machine. No pretty GUI, but functional.
I dunno, Linux to me has very little advantage over OS X for my usage. I suppose if I was “hard core open source 1337″ I would make a full switch, but the Mac has always treated me well.
I don’t believe for a second that people would switch FROM Mac OS X. It’s perfect. I’m not even going to look at your sad list of pathetic bad-user-experience-ware.
I’m going to purchase Parallels with my considerable wealth and disband the company. Who are they trying to kid? Running any other OS on Mac OS X is an unholy unity and must be destroyed.
I’m going to buy Redhat and Ubuntu and MSFT and any other lesser OS so we can all revel in the glory of Mac OS X. Come here kitty.
After looking at the list it appears to me that Linux users spend an awful lot of time looking for and installing/building/whatever programs/applications/executables/whatever.
I prefer to let the better judgement of the Apple overlords provide me with updated software when they deem necessary and at the price they demand.
Praise be to the glory of Steve.
Now that you know the software, good luck with learning how to compile the damn things. Took me a week to figure it out . . .
Most of those mainstraim Linux distros have something like appget don’t they? No need to compile. I know Ubuntu for one has a nice little feature which provides users with a means to quickly install apps without the headache associated with the OS from a few years back.
Synaptic package manager. Like a huge catalog of software. And you can get it all for free. Without compiling.
Leave the compiling to the people who know how to, they’re there to make your life easier.
Don’t Apple programmers have to compile their stuff too, before selling it?
Noraa, your comments are most unwelcomed. :P
Ah. Thanks sparX CG. Synaptic was what I was thinking of. It really does ease the transition into Linux as compiling is no longer necessary for casual users.
You all are aware that OSX IS BSD UNIX. Uhhh, you can compile or get precompiled Linux(UNIX) software to run on OSX(UNIX) The reason OSX is so great is because it is based on the very stable BSD Unix which shares alot of commonality with Linux.
Yes Glory to Steve for recognizing the incredible wealth and stablility of an os based on time proven Unix(BSD or Linux)
Cheers…
