Ode to a Stapler?

I couldn’t help not posting this. This is the main description of a red stapler from ThinkGeek.

People sometimes form very strong bonds to inanimate objects. This is especially the case when you come into daily contact with, say, a red Swingline stapler. The ultimate utilitarian desktop accessory. Its vibrant red color stands out amongst the grays and beiges that consume office space. The sleek, smooth retro lines. The sheer weight. The precise, solid movement. The mechanics. The thick, dense sound as paper is conjoined…

One thing is certain – you will never covet an office supply as much you will your red Swingline stapler.

A stapler? I wonder what the author wrote when he discovered yogurt, or flushing toilets. The anticlimax of it all is the revelation of the 20 sheet capacity. None the less, it’s one hell of a way to romantise about an office requirement.

    Uh…never seen Office Space?

  2. Joe says:

dude, its a reference to office space.

  3. Never seen Office Space? :P

  4. Oh, wait somebody already said that..

  5. ClaMs says:

No idea what-so-ever what ‘Office Space’ is. I have seen ‘The Office’ though!

  6. You don’t know what Office Space is!?!?!? What kind of person are you?!

Seriously.. I thought everyone’s seen Office Space.

  8. Patrick says:

Yeah, this is a reference to “Office Space”.
For those who haven’t seen it… go see it!
Its a good movie! So watch it and enjoy!

  9. It’s funny. On the website, the words “office space” are even bolded. If that’s not obvious, I don’t know what is. Where has “Chris” (new guy?) been all these years if he’s never heard of Office Space :P

  10. ClaMs says:

Well I guess that movie wasn’t as popular in Europe. I like to culture myself with other things besides films. I’m sorry for having that one slip by, but I assure you it won’t happen again, so rub it in while you can.

Plus anyway, the article was about the huge amount of love shown to an inanimate object. Surely you have to agree it was over blown.

Other than that all I can say is that I’ll get my hands on the DVD asap.

P.S. How the hell do you remember quotes from films released 7 years ago?

  11. Aww.. we love to rub things in. :-D

I guess Europeans must be different with films than us Americans are. If it’s a popular movie, people will always notice references to it, no matter how old it is.

And it’s not really a quote, just a reference.

  12. eb! says:

it’s not a quote at all, it’s a fairly big plot line and without it, the movie wouldn’t have been nearly as funny. and the ending would have sucked. but thats all i’ll say. you should see it.

  13. Did you know that the first Red Swingline stapler was specially made for the movie? It’s cool to know some of the history behind things ;).

  14. Hans says:

hmmm im a German and i´ve seen Office Space, so maybe those Europeans arent that different with films, but the movie was never translated to German so maybe this might be one of the reasons why the movie was not that big here.
“xcuse me i think u have my stapler…..”

    Cheers from football Germany

    Hans

  15. chadillac says:

I think you have my stapler… I’m going to burn down this buiding…

  16. Bill says:

Alas, nobody sells staplers in the exact model they used in the movie. The one you see on Thinkgeek is the result of swingline’s attempt to capitalize on the movie.

  17. Pardeep says:

I loved that movie, and yeah swingline didn’t make a red stapler until they were inundated with requests for one after the release of Office Space.

“Hey Peter man, check out channel 9…”

  18. ClaMs says:

Ok ok I saw the movie now. Wasn’t THAT funny. I thought I would bust a gut with all the hype that there was. :)

Regardless, for some unknown reason, I really want to get my hands on one of those staplers now.
