Twin towers turned into battleship?!
The World Trade Center rubble transformed into a full-on battle ready military vessel:
Bringing together America’s two great calamities of the 21st century, the USS New York is being built in New Orleans with 24 tonnes of steel taken from the collapsed World Trade Centre.
Mr Clement said it would be fitting if USS New York’s first mission was to capture Osama bin Laden. He said: “They hit us first, but out of a tragedy a good thing has come, in that we’re building a ship which can help take those people out.
Where do you stand on the matter? The remnants of a tragic day to be turned into a maritime war vessel?

“they hit us first…” sounds like a 1st graders excuse for continuing the problem of violence that we have in this world in the first place.
IMO, people are too sentimental about this stuff. Like seriously, do we need a ship made out of the WTC’s? Atleast they are recycling before they go kill people!
I think this is a stupid waste of taxpayer dollars. I know this is an emotional matter to many people, but we need to focus our energy and resources (money) on improving our situation and that of the world we live in, not on seeking revenge.
I think our energy can be focused on better things.
I was more thinking the US reycling amazing. I know it is a sensitive issue but really their record with green related things is not the best
nice to see them recycle I agee…. but they couldn’t have made monkey bars or used the steel to start work on a new public library… I’m sure the hummers over in Iraq that are “under armored” could have used 24 tons of steel to help keep our boys safe….
this is a classic move on our part… America… planning for peace while preparing for war…
i thought it was spelled tons, not tonnes. tit for tat.
@Noraa Haras:
So you’re saying capturing an evil person who has killed tens of thousands of people in many attacks all over the world is getting revenge? I call it justice, myself..
@hoodoo:
1 tonne = 1000 kilograms, or about 2205 pounds.
Justice?
Nah!
Our military is here to protect your freedoms and liberities. Without them who will protect us when our enemies arrive and want to kill us?
The ship was going to be built with or without 9/11 ever happening… including the steel in the project broadcasts an important message to the terrorists: “you give us lemons, we make lemonade”.
It’s no doubt innovative. Rather than incinerating it, at least it was put to good use.
The shear concept that the US will be using the steel of the twin towers, steel which has seen so many innocent lives lost among its entanglement, to build ANOTHER machine of death which shall claim much more innocent lives shows that America (or rather Bush, his mates and all who voted for him) has no limit to its bloodlust and need for vengance.
It’s a sad sad situation when such a great country which an amazing potential is spurred on by a promise of violence and spillage of blood. Wasn’t this same greed which brought 9/11 about?
Will the US only be remembered for its military power? The only message beening send it ‘WAR…. yes MWAHAHHAHAHAHA!!! We want you DEAD! You cannoy stop us! *evil laugh* Here we come aga-ain!’
Shouldn’t the steel be used to build a couple of libraries? Or even youth centres, projects which are really needed in the states?
Ye! As if the ship will catch Osama. What, will the USS New York have a turban detector, or are you expecting Mr.Laden to be fishing in the middle of the sea?
This is funny.
Really innovative, I might add. All that steel would have been going to waste otherwise. All that junk cleared from the wreckage is government property, I’m glad to see that the steel was recycled instead of thrown away. It’s better than buying all that steel from the Chinese, who have cornered the steel industry and put many, many American steel mills out of business. Keep it all inside the country, I say.
As far as I’m concerned, it shouldn’t matter to anyone if it’s going to be used in our conquest, erm, liberation of Iraq or not, we need the battleship, and it’ll be there for when the time comes to use it. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
I think it’s one of the few intelligent things our administration has done over the past few years.
@ ClaMs
That’s EXACTLY how I feel. This is ridiculous. I find this more offensive then innovative. I can’t imagine how pacifists that died in 9/11 would feel about this. The steel would be much better used in schools or libraries, or youth centers. Things that are ACTUALLY NEEDED here in the states
I think that many of you that are sympathizing with the terrorist. And saying that this is ridiculous. Should just move over to Afganistan, or Iraq and live with them. On 9/11/01 there was a war started by the terrorist. We can do one of two things. Either take it to them on their turf, or wait for them to bring it to us on our soil AGAIN!!!! Personally I believe that we should take it to them. If we allow them to bring their jihad back on our soil then there will be many, many more deaths. Yes, it is a tragedy about all of our soldiers dying overseas, but that is what their job is. They knew the risk associated with the job when they signed up. I personally have three family members who have served a combined five tours of duty in Iraq, and support the troops without any holdbacks.
I will buy a one-way plane ticket to ship any of you bleeding heart *** over seas!!!!!!!!!!
Those who think this is ridiculous are almost too stupid to live! Obviously, you are UNDER-TRAVELED, and UNDER-EDUCATED. Spend some time in a few foreign countries–including the Mid-East before you shoot off your assinine and inane comments about war, violence, and our military machine.
We had more people killed in violent crimes ON OUR OWN CITY STREETS last year than the total we’ve lost in Iraq. WHERE ARE YOU BLEEDING HEARTS when it comes to takiing care of our own backyards?? Nevermind, let me guess…you’re busy voting for other left-wing liberals who think prison life is tooooooo tough for prisoners and victims have no rights!!
Read the history books and do your own thinking–our media IS NOT “history in a hurry” — neither is it balanced.
But better yet, TRAVEL and learn. You’d be amazed at the numbers around the world who depend on us. FREEDOM always carries a high price. Intimidation by terrorists IS NOT FREEDOM.
