AIM VOiP joins the competition with a free number

Faced with a declining user base for its dial-up service, AOL has turned its attention to AIM in the hopes of keeping eyeballs (and ad revenues) from further defections. The newest initiative to be bundled with AIM is “AIM Phoneline,” a VoIP service integrated directly into the instant messaging software. The big draw here is a phone numberâ€â€?AOL is giving one away for free to each user.
If you’re thinking to yourself, “Self, there must be a catch,” you’re right. The free phone number will only accept incoming phone calls, and you’ll still have to sit at your computer (or use a headset with a long extension cord) to do your talking. But free is free, and AOL hopes that cell phone users will flock to the service as a way to get a free home phone number that can keep those monthly bills low, even when your grandmother calls in the middle of the day and talks your ear off about her arthritic knee.
A free incoming number for normal phone calls to come through to your computer? Great idea! Hurry up and reserve your own.
i google it and find hundreds of articles about it, and not one link or anythig on aol or aim sites about it? O_O
[...] If you have a have a AIM screenname, you may remember that AOL was offering free calling features for their members. But in typical AOL style the feature was announced, but not implemented – leaving users in lurch. [...]
I have AIM VOiP for a year now. I have the sevice for $14.95 a month that allows unlimited incoming and outgoing calls to cell phones and landlines.
There is caller ID and answer service.
I like it when I am talking on the phone to someone and another call comes in.It lets me know who is calling and I have the ability to send the caller to my cell phone or to the answer service. I can tell them also to call back later. There are several msg. and all I have to do is click on the msg. I want them to hear without interruting the call I am on at the time.
