Alternate title: Where’s the seat? Anyway, airlines are cutting corners every way possible these day,no food (that was no major loss), less service, less legroom, hnow they are charging more for row and aisle seats. Now you will need to pay extra for A SEAT.
Airbus has been quietly pitching the standing-room-only option to Asian carriers, though none have agreed to it yet. Passengers in the standing section would be propped against a padded backboard, held in place with a harness, according to experts who have seen a proposal.
My question is WHO would pay for something like this?
Short flight commuters and penny pinchers (if it costs less that is)
This was on the news last night. Airbus is denying the rumor and said they have not pitch anything like this to any airlines.
Actually, I think it would be even better if they took all the seats out and tell people to lay on top of each other. Just imagine, you could be stacking people on one another like fish in the sardine cans.
This system would also solve the problem of people trying to get on the plane first, because the people entering the plane first would end up being on the bottom…. noone would want to be on the bottom.
There would also be no use for flight attendants, since there would be no room to walk by. They would need a loading/unloading crew and that is it.
How come noone has thought about this before? :-P
mmmh, imagine having to go to the WC when you’re laying at the bottom…
Given the rapid rise of the Asian middle-class I could see this being a less-bad idea than it seems at first. If it allows freedom to travel (by cutting fares roughly in half since each plane could carry 2x as manny passengers) that would create a new boom in air travel. And given that most of the newly-formed middle class in Asia (ie, China, Viet Nam, etc) has never flown they have no cultural expecations about the experience. Would I want to fly 12 hours standing? Of course not. But a flight from Beijing to Shanghai, or from a rural area to the coast would be a great place to try it.
Now we can add sore feet to the list of usual travel woes right next to jet lag.
