IBM (The Company) to drop Windows

Yes, it’s true. The first Fortune 500 company to swear off Microsoft. Breaking free from the years of reliance on Windows, IBm has decided to dump the OS in favor of Linux.

During a presentation on IBM’s involvement with Open Source, Andreas Pleschek from IBM in Stuttgart, Germany, who heads open source and Linux technical sales across North East Europe for IBM made a very interesting statement that IBM has cancelled their contract with Microsoft as of October this year. That means that IBM will not use Windows Vista for their desktops. Beginning from July, IBM employees will begin using IBM Workplace on their new, Red Hat-based platform. Not all at once – some will keep using their present Windows versions for a while. But none will upgrade to Vista.

Now, I am not implying that Microsoft is some evil money sucking cultural void, seeking to destroy and and all that get in its way, Nor, that Linux is the answer – but I feel MSFT should be concerned that a division of a HUGE company decided to drop its product. Who knows, the American division might be next!

Linux? I always thought of Linux as a developer’s OS and not family friendly, but I guess it wouldn’t be astounding if it ran on IBM default.

What’s the point of a “Developer OS” if it’s meant to be a development platform for software to be shareable with other developers. Where’re the users ?

I think this is great news. Right now Windows has a near-monopoly in the business world, and competition is always good for the user (us). If Microsoft is scared that they’ll lose business, it forces them to make better products (theoretically).

  6. [...] a ser verdade a noticia adiantada pelo uneasysilence (nao estive com muita paciencia para confirmar) eh a primeira empresa da fortune500 a deixar o windows. os computadores da ibm vao passar a correr linux, baseado na distribuicao red hat. [...]

Everyone know windows really sucks. I am not a avid linux user but I got to say I like linux better than windows but I do like mac much better. So its a good think they are switching to linux.
