Mac Mondays: PC’s aren’t dull, at least not in the UK

Apple UK doesn’t believe PCs are as ‘dull’ as the US does. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at the company’s TV adverts for Intel-based Macs. In the original, US-oriented ad, Apple takes a dig at “dull” PCs, but in the version cleared for UK audiences the d-word is peculiarly absent.

Download the two ads

Compare and contrast. First, the US advert, premiered by CEO Steve Jobs at Macworld Expo in January this year:

“The Intel chip. For years it’s been trapped inside PCs, inside dull little boxes, dutifully performing dull little tasks, when it could have been doing so much more. Stating today, the Intel chip will be set free and get to live life inside a Mac.”

Now the UK:

“The Intel chip. For years it’s only been inside PCs, dutifully doing all the things PCs were built to do. Stating today, the Intel chip will be set free and also get to do all the things Macs were built to do.”

Dull? Where did dull go? Get lost in translation?

I live in the uk and have only visited america once and i’m 17. From my perspective i beleive this description of Pc’s being inferior for the use of an intel chip. The advertisement may as well bluntly state that mac systems are much better than Pc’s. The US version must have been fairly contraversial and in my experience with computers, and repairing and configuring them as a hobby, i beleive that macs may have a community, but are definitely not superior to Pc’s. Here are my biased opinions:
    1. Macs have limited software
    2. Macs are expensive for component cost
    3. Osx is slow and fumbly in use
    4. It is very difficult to upgrade or replace parts without great cost
    5. Graphics memory is low in macs
    6. Macs are not easily accessible or discountable
    7. Macs are superior for video editing and image manupulation – why not introduce SLi and current pc northbridge architectures
    8. OSX is not open source and difficult to modify – but this is a problem with windows also – Mac has very good accessibilty to root command line if required
    9. Mac users beleive they are invincible from exploit attacks, this is not a good way to operate – It can cause headaches
    10. Backup and reinstall is slow and painful with macs
    11. What can macs do that pc’s can’t

I understand all the fanboys of macs and theor everyday users will be hitting back hard at my views and i welcome them, please just take into consideration my mind has yet to be expanded and i am starting to dabble into macs since they have gotten better.

i don’t think either machine is ‘inferior’, really.

what i like about apple is that what you see is what you get. pretty much. “here are the specs. here are the upgrades. this is what it will cost you.”

windows machines on the other hand, are a different story. hp offers one machine with x options and y upgrades with a cost of z, minus mail-in rebates, of course. same goes for dell, but the standard specs and the upgrades would be slightly different.

it’s hard to recommend a windows machine to someone and i’ve been using them for just over 10 years, i guess. hp? dell? gateway? emachines?

most of the time i just tell people to pick one (except gateway and emachines) and make sure it has 512mb or ram or more and a dvd burner. to me, the specs in a pc don’t matter because they come so loaded with bullshit that brand new machines run like crap. i can’t reformat and reinstall because that would probably void the warranty, i’m sure.

i’ll be buying my first mac, a13.3″ macbook, as soon as they come out. the standard feature are clear and so are the possible upgrades. and i know exactly what it will cost me when i place the order.

    1. Macs can do whatever PC does, and they will do it better.
    2. Macs are cheaper in longrun as their hardware are far more superior than PCs.
    3. Slow ? He definitely isnt a mac user !
    4. There are many OEM parts around !
    5. Look at how much Graphic memory they stuffed in the Macbook Pro..
    6. How about the student discount ? ( maybe not in uk, fine )
    9. Why ?? i don understand.. i don hav headache operating my mac.
    10. Again.. he definitely nv use a mac before. Mac does backup n install in just few clicks !
    11. Mac’s idiot, show me what we cant do ?!

  4. er1cw says:

well.. i would say.. i hav no problem switching to Mac since K12. In facts, those dull little PC boxes are giving me headache!

  5. alex cd says:

Those dull grey boxes run the world, and i can speak for a majority saying that a users first computing experience is with a regular pc. As i stated earlier, i do not mean to offend anyone, and would most likely feel as you do if i owned mac hardware, and used it on a regular basis, as i try to use mac software and gui as often as possible. I was merely stating (i am a media studies student), that apple’s maeketing strategies are very biased and often confusing to end users with little experience. The whole ‘why switch’ and OS war has gone on too long.

    · Mac IS the 1st GUI OS :P
    · USB port @ keyboard.. Mac only..
    · limited upgrades? PC also like that, rite?

Hehe just saw the ad yesterday on the German TV and its the same like the have in America :)

    Greetings from Germany

  9. alex cd says:

It is more difficult to upgrade with macs for lower cost. PC’s have interchangeable standards whereas macs have custom parts. Usb on the keyboard – Big whoop. I have many keyboards with usb ports built in AND they are dual powered so you can plug devices in without exceeding ampere voltage. lol @ Tanner.

  10. ikonQ says:

Lol @ Tanner. That argument has become hillarious now. :P
I guess that Apple UK was more afraid of insulting PC users. Apple US and Apple AUS obviously could care less :P.

  11. Chris says:

Seems like bad advertising to me… The UK one seems to create a gap between the uses of the PC and the Mac, like saying that the things you do on a PC and Mac are separate. This might confuse someone who wants to buy a Mac, but doesn’t do much more than surf the ‘net and word process. The US ad seems to say that tasks are dull on the PC and a Mac somehow makes it better.
