Update 9/18/06: Please see this post for the new script.

Update 10/13/05: The script has been updated and is now functioning properly. Enjoy updating your iTunes music collection with high quality album art!

Update 10/12/05: Apple has updated the backend of the iTunes Music Store. The script no longer functions properly. Stay tuned for an alternative option.

If you can’t read, and have difficulties following the two steps below, check out the short Wink Flash video.

Album art to match large music library collections can be quite tedious to maintain. The iTunes Art Importer is one alternative for importing individual album covers. The downside is that cover sources often skimp on high quality images. Use the following steps to download high resolution (up to 600 x 600 pixel) album covers for your music collection directly from iTunes.

Step 1: Locate any tracks in your library which are missing their corresponding album art. If you’re interested in checking your ID3 tags, check out MusicBrainz. You’re ability to locate the appropriate album art depends on the accuracy of your ID3 tags. In your iTunes preferences, check the “Show links to Music Store”. This will allow you quicker access to the iTMS from tracks with missing covers.

Step 2: Locate the album [cover] and right-click on the album title. Select ‘Copy iTunes Music Store URL’. Paste the URL into the ‘iTunes Album URL’ field here [src]. The script will spit out two image links. The higher resolution image is the bottom link of the two. Import the image into the corresponding track.

Best tool ever, better than any script or amazon crap look up!!! Thanks again for the work putting it together…

  6. MP says:

It would appear guys that Apple no longer allows download oh hi res artwork. Only avaiable are 170×170 versions. In case of any changes i will inform you

  7. deano says:

You can beat Apple. Get the High Resolution back. Looking forward to the update.

  8. Dave-O says:

Well anyone who has been using multiple sites to grab album art from itunes should consider themselves lucky for finding this site – you can’t even get 170×170 art from most sites anymore.

  9. Dave-O says:

By the way – Thanks for providing this great service.

  10. Kristoffer says:

It would be great to be able to download the hi-res album art again. I really liked this script when it was functional.

  11. Johnny says:

so i guess the error wasn’t just happening to me.
i miss my large album art!

  12. Justin says:

    Yep…it doesn’t work anymore :( what a shame…

  13. Angelo says:

It doesn’t work anymore :(. I’ve really enjoyed it while it lasted. Thanks a lot.

  14. Justin says:

However, it still works for music videos and TV shows, i think.

  15. dx says:

Amazon has just instituted a similar punishment. If you download their covers, they are 500×500…. but with a 200×200 border. You have to crop the border with photo editing software.

Just to this go to Google > click Images > enter the artist and album name in quotes, exa. “Roy Orbison Mystery Girl.” You will usually find 500×500 covers this way. ;-)

  16. Justin says:

Buy.com has some really high quality album art. some are better than iTMS.

  17. steve says:

Any chance of a fix guys?

  18. Ivan says:

I really hope there is a fix for this, I look forward to an update.

  19. Quick says:

Wikipedia & CD Universe still have large artwork for the most part

  20. Ronald Poi says:

I use coveralia.com. It doesn’t have super-quality images, but they’re huge, so you can always resize them with great results…

  21. Bill says:

It’s still not working after it said it was updated.

  22. Darryl says:

You can get album art of this site called http://www.buy.com, the album art is like 500 by 500 and iTunes will make it larger. Just search your artist and select your album. And they are not low quality the quality is like iTunes.

  23. boohoo says:

    It’s down again…

  24. Emory says:

dude, itunes automatically downloads album art now. Just upgrade to IT7.

  25. angry says:

But Itunes 7 requires a crappy itunes store account to access the album art.

If theres an alternate way please post. :0

  26. Welsh Ed says:

    Hey

here is an automatic way to do get high res. images. Yahoo has a program called KONFABULATOR which allows windows users to run widgets on their desktop. One of the widgets out there called COMPANION automatically goes and fetches album art when you play a song, and automatically updates itunes by attaching the art to every song in the album, which in turn updates across to your ipod. There is no manual intervention required. 100% automatic, and better than this manual method imo.

  27. richard tan says:
