AOL goes nuts raising rates!

America Online is raising the cost of its dial-up service to that of its faster broadband service, $25.90 per month.

Dial up for $25.90 a MONTH?!

They are not changing the 10-hour limited-use dialup and bring-your-own access plan, both priced at $14.95 monthly. But honestly, who actually HAS AOL?

Good for them, this should happen all over get rid of dial up, who really needs it or can use it these days! I find 2meg broadband slow at times! Last time I used dial up I was about crying with the speed that it was going at.

I’ve considered getting the $14.95/mo thing for my kids computer because it has really good parental controls built in… but i just can’t stomach installing aol and godknowswhatelse that comes with it on the computer

Telecom industry is moving towards consolidation – one of the desired outcomes is a hardening in pricing. This news along with what I know about negotiating contracts with tier one Internet providers seems to mesh well. Many low cost choices have been eliminated or marginalized. So AOL feels confident enough to raise the prices. The AOL crowd will weigh the price increase against the hassle of making a change….. Most will eat the price increase.

My dad tried AOL for a month trial. When the trial was almost up, he called them to cancel, and they offered another free month. He kept doing this for 8 months until he found a good broadband service.

In Boston, Verizon offers 768k (down) DSL for $14.99 a month.
