UNEASYsilence refreshed [again]

It seems like only yesterday (seven days to be exact) that the frontpage received the UNEASY face-lift. The single column [531 One] theme received an equal share of rants and raves regarding the overall structure and presentation of information. Although the number of positive reviews outnumbered the negative, I was restless knowing that a select few screamed out for the old. For that reason, the notepad was cleared and I started out to to create a two column layout dubbed 531 Two.

531 Two was a collaboration between Dan and myself. The plan was to combine both of our tastes into a single theme reflecting both of our unique yet similar styles. Dan provided a mock-up of what he envisioned in Photoshop and I took the reins from there. My original plan was to create a hybrid of 531 Dark & White mated to a two column base structure. Naturally, I deviated from the original plan(s) and out popped 531 Two. Recent comments and posts follow you throughout the page in the sidebar, Gravatar icons for personality, and an estimated lifespan which should exceed seven days.

Hopefully the refreshed layout isn’t too narrow, dark, loud, or gives off the impression that it is “unfinished”.

On a side note,Windows users who deal with any PHP, HTML, CSS, JS, etc may want to check out Nick Bradbury’s Topstyle which relieved me of my disorganized habits.

very nice… The other layout hurt my head. This one is much better.

  2. Dan says:

    Design is ever evolving…

I think the one column design was extremely radical, and was quite a shock to our readers – so we now present the two column design.

    As Derek calls it 531two!

  3. Michael says:

    I digg it!!

  4. Benji says:

Loving the new design man, congrats. Keep me updated about the stickers.

  5. Derek says:

ah, thanks for reminding me about those. i’m still following up with the printers.

  6. chris says:

    very cool

  7. Justin says:

Nice, however the top header’s a little big.

  8. Derek says:

big blue? what’s not to like? ;)

  9. Dan says:

(To the tune of Jingle Bells – In honor of the phrase ‘Big Blue’)

    I. B. M., Happy men, smiling all the way.
Oh what fun it is to sell our products night and day.
    I. B. M., Watson men, partners of T. J.
In his service to mankind-that’s why we are so gay.

  10. Jake says:

w000000000t! Still don’t care for the pink, and you need the grill back, but much nicer!

  11. maique madeira says:

i could live with the other one and i guess i’ll get used to this one.

i have to say i’m with justin on the header size issue.
don’t know if it’s for the same reason but i’m browsing with a 12” powebook and the maximum resolution is 1024×768.
with a header as big as this it uses half my screen with just the header, leaving me with just a few lines of the first post.

other than this, i can see why people feel more confortable with the two column layout.

  12. lucas says:

i agree. this is much better. i also agree that the top is too deep.

  13. Ben says:

Sweet. Now that there are two columns, will that by chance double the odds that there will be posts pertaining to prostitutes and escorts? My fingers are crossed…

  14. Derek says:

prostitutes and escorts? briefly mentioned here of course.

  15. Dan says:

May we interest you in our Risque category?

  16. ariah fine says:

what happened to offering the one column layout for others to use?

  17. Guy says:

I like it, but i agree with the rest, a lil too much blue at the top…. cut a lil less of an inch off the top and your good to go.

    Guy

  18. Derek says:

ariah, if the requests for the single column return, we’ll go ahead and try to get the theme switcher working properly.

I like it, but i agree with the rest, a lil too much blue at the top…. cut a lil less of an inch off the top and your good to go. – Guy

we’ll see about trimming a little of big blue. personally, i like the empty space up top. i know that maique mentioned being on a small screen. i’m on an x40 with 1024 x 768 and made the big blue header on purpose.

  19. Wash Jones says:

Gotta say… I like the old design better. You know, the one with the teeth grinding. This one looks a little to much like… well, every other website out there. Just leaving some constructive critisism here. I love the site though, I’ve been a loyal reader for a LONG time.

  20. Dan says:

Glad you have been with us a long time Wash

i’m just a little curious… the previous theme that you’re referring to was a standard two column (like this one). what made it any different from the rest of the other websites?

  22. Wash Jones says:

The teeth grinding logo at the top of every page made it stick out. And the minimalistic look is kind of cliche (I’ve always wanted to use the word cliche).

Not that I am bashing the new design, its cool too. I like the site for the content, I wont dislike it for the new look. Also, it’s a real pleasure to hear back from the actual creators of the site, it makes me feel appreciated… all warm and fuzzy inside :) .

yes there are real people behind the curtain ;)

  24. ikonQ says:

I miss the layout of the one before 531One, where we could go through Next and Previous Articles. Any way to implent that again?

  25. Derek says:

ah. something that i missed. you’re referring to the next / previous links while reading single posts. i implemented those on the main page but failed to do so on single posts. i’ll make sure those get implemented.

  26. alexdcd says:

    awesome

  27. NyaR says:

am i supposed to see pink textboxes commentboxes and rss icons? if so, the color doesnt fit.

  28. ikonQ says:

    awesome :D

  29. bala says:

    Oh..this looks very spacious…and cool.

  30. Nicolas says:

yea!! this is really nicer :) nice work!!!!

  31. Derek says:

am i supposed to see pink textboxes commentboxes and rss icons? if so, the color doesnt fit. – NayR

it’s yellow. of course it’s supposed to be pink.

thanks ikonQ, bala, Fabio, and Nicolas.

  32. Battin says:

The new layout is much better..

I visit this page several times a day.

  33. chadillac says:

I like it … however the header is a lil ……. thick?….. and I think you should move the navigational stuff on the left side to the right and push the actual content to the left…. having the content seem “second most important” is kinda messing with me….

  34. Paul Beattie says:

I don’t think the top is too deep. No way its just great. I love it very very nice I must say well done Derek.

    Paul

  35. I gotta say I loved the old black style alot but this 2 column style is much better and more organized for easier reading.

    Thanks!

  36. xSmurf says:

I like it! it’s great :) Great job guys!!

  37. Derek says:

    thanks for the feedback guys.

chadillac, dan and i putzed around as we sent messages back and forth trying to decide content right or left was appropriate. while having content left and sidebar right seems more natural (scrollbar is on the right, why not have nav links closer to the most likely mouse position?) we opted to go with the right side content. i think our eyes (or maybe it’s just me and dan) naturally to the right looking for the navigation. eyes looking right, content on right side, looks good to me.

  38. Dylan says:

    much better.

  39. Jake says:

Still needs the grill back. :P

Also, the comment box doesn’t automatically remember my name and email like it used to.

  40. Jimmy says:

    oh dan and guys,

this is the best one yet,

love the subtle pink and blue colours,

    the font spacing is perfect,

    can i nick it?

    haha joke,s

    best.

  41. William says:

Big improvement over the previous designs. I like it.

I don’t like the Arial, though. I’ve never liked Arial since it’s too mashed together horizontally. Also, you might want to try some padding in those comment boxes and small vertical line-height to make the text easier to read. The design is clean, but the content is smushed together.

    (Hope HTML is enabled…)

  42. Derek says:

Also, the comment box doesn’t automatically remember my name and email like it used to. – Jake

check your cookie settings. i haven’t heard of any other issues with cookies from anyone else.

hey will what do you mean by html enabled? i should have consulted with you and your skills prior to launch. we’ll see about a font change.

  43. William says:

Usually, most HTML code is disabled in comments for CMS’s like WP so it doesn’t screw up the page layout or validation and prevents users from posting unwanted content in the comments. Sometimes, you can enable Textile or Markdown encoding instead.

I tried to paste the code to show a thumbnail linking to the ImageShack-hosted image. I’m guessing WP stripped the code.

  44. Derek says:

ah ok. i understand now. only basic html is allowed ie strong, italics, and links. markdown might be interesting to have.

  45. Jake says:

check your cookie settings. i haven’t heard of any other issues with cookies from anyone else.

It worked just fine on past designs, and I haven’t changed any cookie settings or options..

  46. Emory says:

Dudes, loving the new design. Sorry to say but the old one was

  47. Emoro says:

Sorry about previous post, accidently pressed enter :P Anyways, loving the new look, the old one was a bit hard to handle. I really like the “new comments” on the side. Makes me go back to older stories to see what these people are commenting on.

  48. Jay says:

Well, I’m a little late to chime in about the new theme, but I just had to throw in my 2 cents… I love it! Period. :) (though it doesn’t seem to be saving my form data, either, and nothing has been changed as far as cookie settings go.)

  49. Derek says:

ergo… we’ll have to take a look at see if there is something going on with the backend. the skeleton of this theme is very similar to the first theme i made so i don’t understand what’s happening with the cookie handling. it has to be a wordpress issue, not the theme.
