OSX users may jump for joy, or weep… whatever floats your boat concerning Microsoft’s latest decision to drop support for Windows Media Player on OSX. This coming just after Microsoft’s recent decision to end support for Internet Explorer on OSX. I’m assuming no hearts were broken with that announcement.
Fernando tipped us off to the fact that Microsoft is now endorsing Flip4Mac as a free alternative to playing WMV files on OSX. Flip4Mac allows playback of WMV files from within Quicktime.

Telestream (who makes Flip4Mac) is an awesome company. I live in the same town as them (even tried getting a job there once), and know several employees. Kudos to them and Microsoft for pushing a useful application instead of the usual MS crap.
The only problem with flip4mac is that is doesn’t play the MMS streams. some play and some do not play. In LyFOX for mac the videos dont stream and it will only show with the WMP plug-in and not with flip4mac. I read they are working on that.
Very cool. Me personally hardly ever use OS X, so this isn’t really too important, but for you iBook, “Powerbook,” and G4 users, enjoy!
I was way psyched for this plugin. Too bad it crashes Safari after the video is finished playing. Deleted.
“Ugh. Me personally hardly ever use OS X. Grug.”
