Download After Dark and install it on Windows XP
This post was published 4 years 3 months 21 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding. We love those flying toasters! Now you can actually install After Dark natively on Windows XP.

What you don’t have After Dark? You can download After Dark 10th Anniversary Edition here or After Dark Deluxe here. If that isn’t sweet enough, this is how you do the Windows XP install.
This information only applies to version 4.0 of the Afterdark series. Other versions of Afterdark will not install on Windows XP.
Installation:
From your CD locate the ADE folder.
Copy all of this folder to your harddisk
Locate and edit the setup.inf file in the new folder
Locate the section of the file that looks like the following:
FileCount=8
File1=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12592,
4.0.0.0,5,folder.afi,1,3,AD2.afi,,File2=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,13536,
4.0.0.0,6,folder.afi,1,3,Disney.afi,,File3=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12560,
4.0.0.0,7,folder.afi,1,3,MAD.afi,,File4=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12400,
4.0.0.0,8,folder.afi,1,3,Marvel.afi,,File5=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12976,
4.0.0.0,9,folder.afi,1,3,StarTrek.afi,,The file count might vary typically the value is 7 or 8. Change the FileCount to be one less.
e.g. For my example above
FileCount=7
Run the setup.exe from the ADE folder.
If you are successful then you should have all of your favourite antics from Bad Dog, Super Guy’s Crazy thoughts and the musical Flying Toasters
Some people have reported that the After Dark tab does not appear correctly on the display screen (see above). If this is the case with your installation then select the settings tab and press the advanced button. The Afterdark controls may appear here.
NOTE: If you choose Fish World, the Art Critic or Rain Forest modules then these cause problems with the options and may lock up, you will need to restart before you can configure any other modules. However if you are happy with the default options then these will run ok.
As mentioned ONLY 4.0 modules will run on XP this means that you won’t be able to have you Startrek and Simpsons modules running.
[Install instructions via]
When I open the “SETUP.INI” file in Notepad, and edit the FileCount from 8 to 7, an error pops up when I try to save it saying that the path is invalid. Then, I just created it agian, deleted the old file, and replaced it, then ran the setup from the ADE folder, and got an error saying that it couldnt read setup filecount 7 or something…
Actually, the “setup.ini” file is read-only. Right-click on it, click on the Properties, and remove the check in the box on Read-Only.
Also, I set the filecount to six, and the install worked with no problems…
how do we configure the after dark screen saver? when i click on settings it says after dark preferences can be found in the after dark tab of display properties. not tab exists.
Derek;
Have you rebooted your system?
It appeared after I rebooted…
If someone has just the nanites saver from the Star Trek: The Next Generation module and a way to get it to run on XP, could you please send it. I’m on dial up and there’s no way I can download a big file so just the one saver is all I need. I don’t remember how these apps ran (been a while)so if a saver won’t run on its own without the entire module, never mind. Just had to ask anyways.
Thanks

After Dark 3.2 for Windows XP
For those that miss the old Star Trek modules that don’t run on XP, this is for you. I got version 3.2 of After Dark to run on XP pretty well. It’s not full 3.2, but rather the runner, .dll, and support files for it, but it has the best parts of 3.2 and I think most, if not all 3.2 version modules will run on it fine. It won’t go into the display properties box but it does run hidden with a task starter next to the clock, so as long as you turn off your XP screensaver (set it to none) you should be ok. It works perfect on my XPsp2 and I hope you have the same luck with it.
Be sure to read install info on my site fully and enjoy! ^_^

Hi,
There is an even easer way to do it! All you do is right click the installer and select properties and select the Compatibility tab and click the check box which says “Run this program in compatiblity mode for:” and select Windows 95 from the drop down menu. Click OK. Run the setup as normal. You may encounter an error. Just click OK and the setup will proceed with the install!
Works for me and I am running Media Center!
Hi, It works good, exept for that the old modules (the non-3d ones) display the “Starry Night” screen saver and a error message: “Can’t load: Modue pathname”. I’m thinking that it doesn’t like the new 8.3 file format. how would I work around this, because the old ones are cool?
Hi, I just noticed that both links are dead.
Is it possible to get any mirrors for the files?
I’ve been looking forward to downloading a working copy of AfterDark…
Thanks.
-Mike.
You can get just the AD 4 engine with installer from my site. (After Dark 4+ 1.0) Some of the modules are downloadable too. Version 3.2xp is also still there for those that want the older modules to run under WinXP. The older modules don’t run on NT Windows versions with version 4 engine as far as I can tell. I’m still working on a way to do that with the version 4 engine.

I tried both sets of linke, and both come back as unavailable. Any others?
Can anyone help me out with the shock clocks ad file?
Installed After Dark 4.0 on XP and got it going fine, but original Totally Twisted Shock clocks is not on this edition! and have lost the old floppy’s for this.
Can someone please forward me the Shock clocks AD file?
andy_taylor@oilstates-uk.com
I love after dark, but where is the original flying toasters.ad? Anyone have it?
Shock Clocks module available on my site as well as original Flying Toasters module.
Direst link thus: http://www.geocities.com/thypentacle/modules32xp.html
Just download the zip file with the letters of the .ad file you want. Example… Shock Clocks is in the ‘R-S/725kb’ download link and Flying Toasters is in the ‘E-F/698kb’ download link.
Hope this helps.
@ThyPentacle: do you think it will be possible to write a AD 4.0 screensaver (like you did) that also supports the older modules? That would be so cool, to have all my old stuff with the good panel integration under XP!
Not sure if that would be possible, but I’m sure in can be done. (Bit over my head though.) I just repackaged a mix of older and newer drivers and exe’s into a new installer to sort of ‘bypass’ some issues with the application on new systems. :)
settings tab and press the advanced button, ya what advancef botton do you see all i see is “do you wanna go to the fraking after dark web page” ~*~ you smoking something there and u ant sharring?
Hey ThyPentacle! I was able to download one module from your really cool afterdark section but now it says bandwidth has been exceded. Will your site be back online soon? Thanks a lot!
i was searching for afterdark everywhere, in p2ps… in pages.. and no one have it.. this page :P save my life ^_^ thanks for the after dark men!!! so many years T_T
Thank you so much for sharing! I was going crazy trying to find it. =)
I’m so glad i’ve found this i’ve been looking for ages.
Is there any way at all as to getting the simpsons back I really want that again.
Thanks so much! It works perfectly. I’d love to find “The Simpsons” for PC. It doesn’t seem to be around anywhere, but I’m very grateful for what’s here.
Excellent site! I’ve been looking for Starry Night for my computer for AGES (I have windows xp) and kudos to the user whom said to put it under compability for Windows 95! Thanks! BAD DOG!
Say, I have downloaded the deluxe one and the deluxe modules aren’t working. I need a fix, if you can.
Many of the sceen savers have an error message and run Starry night including a bunch of my favorites like bad dog! and you bet your head. Is there a way around this?
This is a great thing u have done for afterdarkers

Hi I’m trying to run lunatic finge on XP. I installed AD3.2 for xp but it ran really choppy and now I installed “Deluxe” (4.0) but can’t get the tab to show up in display properties. Does anyone know why this is happening?
MikeyH – you probably need to set your screen size to 640×480 and 256 colors to run some apps. On XP you have to follow these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q286906/ (MS knowledge base)
I speak for all the old Mac Hackers…Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I am a nostalgia freak. If I had the funds, and resources, I would be playing Mac Moria, Cythera, and all my old favs all day, lol. Still, being stuck on a pc has its advantages…I get to learn all about the new virus’s that come out! lol. anyway, once again, thank you so much! I love seeing those flying toasters, bad dog and others messing around on my screen again. I just wish I could get Satori and some of the others to work. BTW, I just sent this site and Pents to all of my friends.
Thanks to Will Griffths for reccomending compatability mode. I too run xp media center and it works perfectly for me. Thanks for the hot tip! Also thanks UNEASYsilence for the download! until now i was stuck with 3.0 on an old computer!!! W00t!

Best to all… :)
Thanks THYPENTACLE. You read my mind, much appreciated for hosting that.
P.S. I really hope the “Confetti Factory” and the “Dropping Marbles” are in the pack! :D
Your link didn’t work, THYPENTACLE… In Firefox it just displayed a pretty-patterned hollow box, and in Internet Explorer I just got like 10 google text advertisements… Fake?
I hate when people lie to promote their website!!
Sorry I double-posted up there, it wasn’t showing up after I posted. :P Please delete the first one I wrote…
Anyway, I got this to work now on Windows XP, thanks a lot! I had a problem with the install though… Setting the FileCount to 7 didn’t work, so I changed it to 6 and it installed fine.
One thing though… Has anyone been able to get the “Classic” modules to work, like Boris the Cat, Mowin’ Man, Marbles, and the other originals? The Deluxe ones are alright, but the classics are the best!
Thanks again for hosting this…
My site was attacked and my 30 gigs of bandwidth was used up within three days after I posted links to the files… site will be back up on the first of next month.
Sorry bout that, but that’s the price you pay for not having to pay for hosting… hehe
Thy
Does anyone have a working version of this with the Paper, Rock, Scissors module running? Oh how I miss watching the scissors go Zorro on the paper and then getting shattered by the Rock.
Everything downloaded alright but despite the fixes listed, I can’t find the tab for after dark. The other install attempts when I was able to find the tab; flying toasters would run without sound. Anything I can do? I’m looking forward to trying to download from thy after the first of the month.
I use to have After Dark and I loved it!!! Igot a new computer and it got lost in the transition. I have tryied many sites but but none of them have any sound.. Can
you tell me why? After Dark has by far the BEST screen savers…
Sincerely,
Jacqui
ALL of the screensavers appear as the starry night one!!!
HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP!!!!!!!!!
I found afterdark 2.0 in an old old cd that used early 90’s and that was supposed to run only in fat or fat32 (Understanding Windows 9x). Anyway I installed on Xp but taking into account the next actions:
1) Runing the setup with Compatibility for Windows 95 and
2) Runing the After Dark.exe with same change to see what happend.
I didn’t made such changes mentioned and is working prety fine.
Note: Don’t use Enable Corners, it hangs session, no computer.
:0)-
I can’t get any of the older ones to work either and they are all I’m interested in. Is there at least a good port of these to XP anyway? I don’t care if they aren’t exact just as long as they still have the same spirit as the originals.
How can I get your After Dark for Windows XP edition? I went to your website and all I could see were junk links and one big textured box.
Could you post the file on raphidshare or megadownload or anywhere, please? Thank you.
je veut jouer a cela
OK my site is dead but here is the full After Dark Suite for all who want it…. fully XP ready…. includes ALL working original modules plus two extra addon ones (Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation)… and ALL After Dark versions available for any Windows OS.

I have The Simpsons Screensaver module for After Dark, email me or add me on MSN and I’ll send it to you- phil_39@hotmail.com.
if this pack is anything like the program i had back when u had 2 install it usein floppy disks, THIS IS GOING TO ROCK OUT LOUD!
I can confirm the AfterDark 4.0 does indeed work on Vista, although it will NOT install on the Display Properties menu. But you can open it through the shortcut icon in the start menu and everything else seems to work fine. Thanks for the links, THYPENTACLE. ;)
Hey THYPENTACLE, I just got after dark, its soo cool, but i was wondering if you could send me the add ons for Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. thanks!

Thanks in advance
hey the links dont work could u either send me a link that works, the afterdrk program or try and fix it, actowally could u send me an e-mail if u fixed ot
To RCS:
I don’t know… it should work in XP. I have installed it in XP Home and Pro with no issues… unless it’s some new patch microsoft put out on their update page that maybe flubbed something up recently?? I know this problem happens in Vista (which I don’t support with this installer) so maybe microsoft has updated XP with the different registry methods as there are in Vista…
Sorry I don’t know what to do to help ya there. :(
To Thypentacle:
I kept trying to install and it finally worked, don;t know what happen, but all the modules work. Thanks for reviving AD. Question, will the Star Treck modules run on XP?
To RCS:
The Star Trek modules in my pack work but they are for version 3.2xp so you must install that on XP to use them… which you can install and run along with version 4 of course… but so far the only modules that work in the AD4 engine are version 4 modules. Unless you’re on Windows ME and below. ;)
Hi!
This is splendid – it works!
Thank you – my memories became softer.
/Tommy

Credits and THANKS to ThyPentacle for the uber kick-a$$ download!
I’m ready to toast my toilet now…
At last… Thanks THYPENTICLE, I’ve been hunting for After Dark 4.0 for years. I have the original CD somewhere (I last tried to install it two or three years ago), but the installer dies halfway through…
But anyway, on to the main reason why I wanted to post: the issues with it running only certain modules, but not others, depending on your operation system.
You will find, as someone pointed out, that all After Dark modules work great guns if you’re running Windows Me. In fact, it’s ANY Windows 9x that it will run them all without problems.
However, if you’re running an NT-based Windows (2000, XP or Vista), After Dark 4.0 will only run 4.0 modules, and 3.2XP will only run version 3 and earlier modules.
Now, I’ll say it right now: there is NOTHING that can be done about this. It’s an archetectural thing about NT-based Windows.
Windows 9x was based upon DOS. It was the upgrade path for millions of Windows 3.1 users. It was a hybrid 16/32-bit OS. As such, it supported something called a ‘universal thunk’. It means 16-bit code could call 32-bit code, and 32-bit code could call 16-bit code. Which was absolutely needed, because Windows 9x was still largely (most of the USER code, and about half of the GDI) 16-bit code. If they couldn’t call each other, the OS wouldn’t have been able to run.
NT-based Windows, on the other hand, was always 32-bit. Beginning to end. No 16-bit code that could be anti-social and needed to be supported through a vast network of locks, mutexes, thread synchronisers, or anything like that. As such, NT only supported ‘generic thunks’; specifically, a 16-bit program could call 32-bit code. And a program had to be specifically coded to do that, using a temperamental API that I’m pretty sure no-one uses anymore.
Now, here’s the rub: After Dark 3.0 (and earlier) modules are 16-bit. After Dark 4.0 modules are 32-bit. On 9x, this works fine, since 16 and 32-bit code can call each other without any problems.
NT-based Windows cannot (CANNOT. I REPEAT, /CANNOT/) do it this way. Obviously, After Dark 4.0 can’t call the 16-bit code in 3.x and older modules. The 16-bit code in 3.2XP could conceivably call the 32-bit code in 4.0 modules, but it would require a great deal of rewriting using that pain-in-the-neck API I mentioned above. I doubt you could pay anyone enough to do it. It’d be like writing After Dark again from scratch.
Anyway, just my contribution.
And thanks again, THYPENTICLE. I suddenly have a overwhelming desire for a slice of toast… :D
Glad my link is still up and working! ^^
NOTE: If you have issues installing the 3.2xp version turn off any anti-virus software and put the folder for the installer on root C: and run it again. Some old installers like these can’t read long folder names or folders with spaces in them.
Best to all AD’ers!
Thy
I like streaming movie but I don’t now
Now, I’m *not typing* that the links listed above *were* worthless … but I’ve not been able to download anything from’em … and they’re worthless now. Wouldn’t mind seeing *bad links* deleted from this page. WOULD LIKE to see a working link – such that I could download After Dark. THINK THAT this page should list the *most recent* posting FIRST (and then the second most-recent, and so forth), so that a reader doesn’t have to read EXTREMELY LONG emails that just don’t take anyone anywhere. I’m not typing – here, that the links *were* bogus, nor that the authors of that text were dishonest. Presumably, they’re all boy/girl scouts. But these links are worthless now. And I do *question* them. AND I’m forced to type that the authors of such worthless links aren’t doing a very good job. ***Wouldn’t mind reading text that had more value … ***
Hello everyone… Sometimes the above download links do not work… You can always go to my website at http://www.zaheer.co.nr and click on Free Downloads… From there, you can download Afterdark for Windows XP/ Vista…
Enjoy!!!
I did get AfterDark 2, 3 and 4 to work with Windows Xp.
If somebody could figure out to get my after dark totally twisted screensaver also, I would be truely grateful!
Is there a vista supported installer yet? I got the 3.2 version installed, but the 4.0 gives me the error RCS got: Could not modify the registry, #5, Line 32. I’ve tried running it as an administrator and in compatibility mode. Any ideas?
How do you get the old AfterDark Versions like 2.0, 3.0, More AfterDark, and Totally Twisted to work. I now have AfterDark 4.0 installed and the modules are working when I preview them. Ron please tell me how they work, I want to get the Zot module and the original starry night module with the lightning option, and nocturnes.
Thanks,
My email is johnb9970@yahoo.com
i like lawnmowers
Hey – Thypentacle download works!!!!!! I love after dark, brings back the old memories of how badass of a computer I thought I had back then running these… ahhhh good times! Thanks for spending the time to fix them up guys.
Thanks so much! I was lounging on the couch (sick day… bleh.) waiting for my monitor to power off when I had the sudden urge to see marbles bouncing down the screen, instead. Again, thanks! =D
Hey… I got After Dark: Totally Twisted to work on my computer but the only screen saver that’ll work is Starry Night. I can’t get anything else to work. Can someone help me with this?
Thanks.
I know this is an old thread, but I found that if you install the old screensavers first, (like StarTrek), then you can install After Dark 4 over them, then they will work (mostly) correctly. Just remove the old After Dark programs from your StartUp folder. Don’t restart your computer before installing AD4. There will still be color depth limitations for modules that only run in 256 color modes. Some will still not work, or run to fast, but many of the old ones will work.
Hello, both download link are dead. Where can i download Afterdark 4?
Thanks
